  • Annual Trivial Complaint - Pan Automation

Each year I like to remind Cakewalk that the way Pan automation works is dumb.  To move a node to the bottom of the lane, you scroll numbers up.  To move a node to the top, you scroll the numbers down.

No answer or solution is expected.  I just want to continue complaining about this because it is so needlessly messed up.

Thank you.  I feel much better now.

For MIDI pan, there's even a setting in Edit > Pref > Customization : [ ] Display Left on Top for MIDI Envelopes. I wonder why not audio?

Customizable would be good.

To make this more annoying, my console has encoders that turn endlessly, unlike traditional 7:00 to 5:00 pan pots, so it is hard to get write pan movements in real time. If I flip the consoled and use faders, it's a little better, but then it's hard to center.

(I had an African slit drum playing various tones and I wanted some tones left and some right so there was a lot of panning.  I could have put this on two tracks, but Sonar crashes when I have too many VIs.  No big deal. Just explaining.)

Since you write in public forum, while you can ignore offers you can not block they appear
For automation writing:
a) N buttons (5,7,...), each set predefined Pan level directly. So you are always one button press away from desired pan position (but can not write "smooth" changes)
b) "normal" knob or fader, with bright "central" part setup for pan center
c) endless encoder with tuned for your convenience resolution
d) a+b+c, to use each when desired. For (b) to work nicely with other during the same writing session, the fader should be motorized (or "virtually" motorized, f.e. on the phone/tablet).

All variants can be done with AZ Controller and any MIDI device... gamepad... Android/Apple with TouchOSC/Lemur.
Note that AZ Controller will not work in parallel with stock plug-in for your V700 (they will clash badly), so you will need a separate device.
