I have a 20 (or so) years old .bun file. (With audio and midi data). When I try to open it Sonar X3 goes through the process of unpacking the individual audio files contained therein but right at the end I get the message "Cannot read file" and as a consequence nothing is loaded. Neither audio or midi.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Grant

yuh i have a few of these as well.  i always wished Cakewalk would've created a utility that would open everything in the corrupted .bun/.cwb file except the stuff that was actually corrupted.  i even mentioned it here on the forums a few times throughout the years, but no

Yes, that would be useful!

Just a shot in the dark here, but have you tried opening it in safe mode? Hold down the shift key when you click on the file. It may get you as far as at least being able to get your audio & MIDI files to load or it may not work at all.

No, I haven't. I've just shut down for the night but will definitely try that first thing tomorrow. Thanks, will let you know how I get on with that.

Try and load it in the latest CbB. We have made tons of changes over the years to make file load more resilient. If it still fails try loading it in safe mode.

Yes it's odd to me to see that given the situation that anyone would still be using older versions of Cakewalk.
Don't get rid of them, keep them installed, but you owe it to yourself to update as things have become better than ever stability wise etc.

And a lesson we all learned and talked about last year when Sonar was put to pasture, :
ALWAYS BACK UP YOUR MUSIC FILES IN AS MANY FORMATS AS YOU HAVE>

I still have every song I work on saved as a MIDI file. Most of my hard work goes there. I can always re sing or play my guitar parts. The BUN file was a great idea but should have never been your only plan for back ups. I have seen many threads here by people burned by that one.

for me, opening in safe mode will open the project, but with absolutely nothing in it

Thanks for the replies everyone. Tried safe mode - no joy. Ho - hum, it's back to the drawing board!
