Simple question: Where do you turn on the ripple editing option?

On edit, I see it is in the Option pull-down of the track window.

OK, for those wondering about ripple...here is a perfect example of how ripple editing works for me....

An Editor sends me a program to score the music.  It has Scenes 1,2,3,4,5 in order.  I compose the music, send it in and music gets approved.  However, the producer decides that scene 5 works better where scene 2 is and scene 2 should go between 3 and 4.  This happens to me A LOT.

In the past I would copy down all my tempos in the effected scenes (having ritards or accel would be very risky), copy and paste what I could ever so carefully.  Most of the time it would be quicker for me to insert something like 100 measures, paste in effected area and then delete and shift everything into place.  I don't have time to explain why that works better here,  but lets say this is not a simple thing to do and get perfectly correct.

So now with ripple I should be able to copy and paste scene 2 between 3 and 4, then copy and paste 5 after scene 1.  I still will have to pay very close attention,  but that is just 2 edits as oppose to probably 30+.

THANK YOU BAKERS!

Think of Ripple Editing as enabling editing of the timeline, and the clips do what is necessary to conform to the edited timeline. Examples:

  • You want to take out two measures of a song. So you take out those two measures; all the clips within those measures go away as well, and the two measures close up so there's no two-measure space. In other words, you've deleted two measures of time, and as a result, that deletes two measures of clips.
  • You're writing a song, and you have a verse and a chorus. You want to add a second verse before the chorus. So, you copy the first verse and paste it before the chorus. This adds enough time to the timeline so that the clips can paste into that space.

Of course SONAR's implementation is more sophisticated than that, but those are probably the most common use cases.

See the 2017.05 issue of Tech+Miusic (coming soon) for more examples.

I would just like to remind all that with great power comes great responsibility. Having worked with ripple editing in Vegas, I found it is easy to destroy a project (or do a lot of undos) if you are not careful. And, to be the master of the bloody obvious, only enable it when you need it and turn it off when done.

EDIT - Solved.
I realised that I hadn't done Copy Special, which allows you to select "Copy Tempo Changes". Works beautifully.

Hi,

Can someone confirm whether tempo changes are also moved when ripple editing? They seem not to be. I just did a simple experiment (using only midi) where I put some tempo changes in at the position of one clip, then copied that clip using ripple editing to further along the timeline. However, it didn't copy the tempo changes. Is this how it works? I tried it with Ripple edit selection, and Ripple edit All. I would have thought that tempo changes would also be moved.

Thanks
Dave

So just an update on my end...I did the Early Access while working on 2 projects, something I should not have done, with NO issues. The ironic thing is I did not need the Ripple option.  Oh well,,,
