I was always curious why Cakewalk would drop Pentagon from Sonar but keep Square.

Sure, Pentagon is a little bit out of date and has a few bugs, and that maybe that might not be part of the image you want to present of what SONAR is.

Square, however, is farther out of date and buggier.  It is older with a smaller feature set.  Not only that, but for me the GUI is not stable.  When I try to scroll through patches I get some noise and randomness until it settles into the patch.  Likewise, when I adjust any of the controls, the GUI goes crazy and seems to randomly flash through parameters for most of the controls.

I don't expect that anyone owes me an explanation of these kinds of product decisions, but to me it makes no sense that if you are going to eliminate one of two products, that you would discard the better one.

Nope.. lots of better chioces, many are free and almost free. Keep you eyes on the "Deals" sub forum if your looking for a bigger collection of VST's. Great one right now on the Air Complete pack from JRR shop.
This has just about everything possible and most is better than average. For me the Piano and organ were worth the $60.

Haven't used Square (or Pentagon for that matter) in a long long time. I think it would be great to have Pentagon updated and brought along with Sonar. Although it looks like Z3ta1 has filled that niche as a freebie giveaway synth. Inclusion of Square must just be an oversight (I would guess).
BTW - I checked out your mumpfucious.wordpress.com site - and as a Black Sabbath/Ozzy fan was pleased to find the Charles Bradley cover of "Changes" - awesome. Great cover. Thanks.

I have never bother much with Square.  I have always like Pentagon, which was included from Sonar 5 thru X3.  It has some great presets, and I think it is a good companion to z3ta+.

But it does seem that Pentagon suffers from a (speaker blowing) feedback loop if you load a preset with certain Simulator features active.  I would think the easy fix would be to re-issue the preset banks with this feature turned off in the presets.

There are some great presets included in Pentagon, that are not all replicated in z3ta+, but with some work it might be fun to try to replicate some.

And to add to what Cactus just mentioned, the VacuumPro synth from AIR is a very good sounding virtual analog, with tons of good presets.

Too many synths, not enough time these days, LOL!!!

Glad you enjoyed that.  The good news is that he just recovered from stomach cancer and will be touring this summer and fall.

Back to topic:

I don't really need more synths.  I have been a member of the cakewalk community since before this forum existed and if you stick around long enough, you pick up a few things.

I have a fond spot for Pentagon, which I purchased from rgc:Audio a couple of years before them being acquired by Cakewalk.  I was disappointed that they let it go.   Out of curiosity I tried Square.  From my original post you can see I was not impressed.  It just seemed really odd that they would keep that one and drop Pentagon.

Square 1 does not have a bug causing certain patches to blast high volumes of noise when loaded. Square 1 does not require SONAR to run as administrator. As a matter of fact, for years Pentagon was the only plug-in requiring administrator access. Rather than spend money to address these issues, Cakewalk decided to discontinue Pentagon. There is nothing stopping you from using the plug-in. Keep in mind, Platinum includes all the plug-ins bundled with lesser versions of SONAR. Square 1 is included with Artist/Professional and Platinum.

I deleted x3 and now Square is gone... I don't think Plat still has any RGC stuff... otherwise help me get it back as I have a few things with square. I've updated to 23.5.0 as of yesterday

You need to download the Artist Instrument Collection, which includes Square 1.
