Is it possible to change the snap duration in staff view? What I mean is, by default it appears that the snap duration is the same as the duration of the note selected. Ie. quarter notes snap to quarter durations,  8th notes to 8th duration, etc etc. What I want to do is place a quarter note at 8th durations. I can't see an option to change the placement durations to snap in staff view however, so I have to place 8th notes and manually change the duration to quarter notes, which is time consuming. I have cakewalk home studio 2002 installed and this is a native capability, so it's odd that I can't find such an option in music creator 6. Anyone know?

It's there. I'm not on the DAW right now, but it is possible to do this since that is the only way I work is in staff when editing midi and it's there....

they change the location of various things from one version to the next so it might be hidden in some other menu or location.... but it's there. Use the users manual and help.... believe it or not, that probably has the answer in it.

If I understood you, you want to change the snap notes duration, right?

1. Right Click the Snap Icon in Control Bar
2. Click "Snap Settings..."
3. Click and Hold the Note Duration (Left most cell)
4. Select the duration as desired

Yeah the problem is this doesn't effect snap duration in staff/notation view. In this view, duration always seems to set to that of the note selected. So if you place quarter notes you can only do so in quarter duration. I was wondering if there was a fix/way around this, which to my knowledge and extensive research there does not seem to be.

Snap settings have nothing to do with note duration. Note duration info here

I'm sorry things are being so confused. The two numerical quantities being discussed are note duration and snap settings. The problem is that in staff/notation view, I cannot set the snap settings at all. The snap settings default immutably to the note duration selected. Thus, in staff view, the snap setting is the note duration. IE if a quarter note is selected the grid snaps to quarter increments, sixteenth to sixteenth, etc. It doesn't appear that there's a way to change this. Obviously I can change the note duration no problem, but I cannot change the snap setting in staff view (independent of note duration) at all.

Best not to conflate "snap settings" and "note duration" into snap duration. Guaranteed confusion (at least on my part). Typing the "N" key might help to get "snap settings" in staff view.

Yeah thanks for the "N" tip that helped before when it wasn't snapping at all. But I mean okay so it's either snap on snap off as the old saying goes but in terms of fine control it's not there. The problem with not conflating "snap settings" and "note durations" is that such a mistake is the core of the problem; that is, it's exactly what music creator 6 is doing, the thorn in my side so to speak. :-X

You may have an easier time working in the PRV. Although it looks a lot different from the staff view, it is a better maintained section of the application.

Yeah that's what I've been doing, it's just not very "musical" I mean staff/notation view is good to see what all the instruments are doing at a glance whereas PRV is muddled and flat. Granted it's good for some stuff, controlling envelopes. But meh.
