  • I think Sonar X3 has some annoying copy and paste bug. (p.2)

I'm not sure I'm completely following you're videos, etc., but if it's a simple instrument track, you either have to drag select the actual notes in staff view, and then the normal copy and paste will work, or if you select via the timeline, you have to use copy special and explicitly choose the "Events in Tracks" option, and then normal paste will work. So while there doesn't seem to be any real logic to it, that's the way it works, and it's still the same in Platinum. Some other issues with simple instrument tracks have been ironed out over time, but that's just probably one that was overlooked.

The problem still exists in Platinum, so don't bother upgrading for this reason!

Has anyone had any updates as to if Cakewalk intends to fix this in Sonar Platinum?  The only thing support suggested as a "clean install", which did not change anything.  Thanks.

You know, this has been a problem for YEARS now.  At first, I thought that it was my destination track wasn't in focus when I pasted and appeared to get nothing.  After many months, I realized that this paste that appeared to do nothing was actually pasting the midi notes in the origin track at the same point it was copied from.  Hence, the double MIDI note problem that you don't see until later and by then, you forgot all about the paste that did nothing.

At this point, if I paste and see nothing were I thought it should be pasted, I know that SONAR pasted it somewhere unintended by me and I instantly hit CNTL Z to avoid the double midi note issue.  This is working because I can't remember the last time I stumbled across double midi notes in any of my tracks.

Now, sometimes, after I hit the CNTL Z, i see in track view that I did not have the destination track in focus (my bad) but more than most, even with the correct destination track in FOCUS, the paste appears to be non-existent.  I am convinced that either these is a bug buried in SONAR or that the bakers need to make it more clear where the paste is happening.  I wouldn't mind a dialog box to pop up to let me either confirm the paste to the published destination track or allow me to change the destination track measure and beat as well. The only thing I know of that fixes this paste issue is to QUIT SONAR and restart it (what a PITA).

I know we all have been griping about this issue and I don't remember the bakers even addressing this in any of the forum threads where this has been brought up.  I could be wrong and would gladly retract and read any threads that can shed more light and this issue.

The original post referenced X3 which had issues syncing track focus between the PRV and the Track view.

I know I don't do as much copy/cut-pasting as some users so it's quite possible there's some issue that I just don't encounter in my workflow, but I can safely say I've ever seen a paste operation unexpectedly starting at a track other than the one that has focus in the Track View. The only outstanding issues I know of that are relevant are:

1. If the project has a locked PRV in it, changing track focus in an active PRV does not work; you have to make sure the focus is right in the Track View.

2.  Using Paste Special and specifying a Starting Track other than the focused track has not worked for several releases. The focused track is always the target. This primarily affects pasting from one track to another from the Staff or Event List views where it's not easy to change/verify track focus.

Hard to do. I used to look forward to buying and updating Cakewalk almost every year since I bought Cakewalk DOS back in the late 80's. It first started out with midi, that I synched with a audio striped track on my multitrack tape deck for the audio. Cakewalk worked great through me making a dedicated DAW for it. When the Sonar series came out after a few versions, I started getting simple midi copy, paste and repetition errors. After a few perfect repetitions the timing would change, instead of .030, .060, .000. I'd get for example .345, .866, 993. I sent the problem to Cakewalk, and the next version it was fixed, then the next version it came back again, I sent a email to Cakewalk, they said they would look into it. A few months ago, I had to use a older version and imported my midi track, then copy, paste, and multiply the repetitions and then exported that into my latest version Sonar Platinum. I bought a whole lot of video and audio software programs, and if something was not fixed I don't ever remember being asked to pay and it may get fixed. If you buy something and all the features do not work, you are able to return it, or get a free update since it never worked properly. Now I'm sitting asking myself do I pay $249 and hope they fix a problem which is over 6-10 years old? Will it repeat itself, work with the next version, and then not with the next? I can't do it. I'll give them $249 and I only have 12 months for to fix it with no guarantees. Updates should be free for something that was working, stopped working or never worked. Well everything else works pretty good. People should be not charged for something that stopped working or never worked like it was intended. I've used different AMD CPU's and motherboards, and recently went back to a INTEL processor and motherboard and still have the same problems, not to mention Win XP to Win 10. I love Cakewalk but I don't think the people who work there now are the original or software programmers but only come up with new ideas. After 30 years, I think I spent my last dime on Cakewalk, I'm sad but unless I can get a free trial update and everything finally works right again I will keep working with my last version until I need or want to look for a new software for my DAW. It's been a great 30 years. Maybe it's time to move on when a company cannot fix midi problems that once worked?

Cakewalk just released Ripple editing which fixed almost every single issue cut/copy/paste.
And it appears to be working great.

I look at it this way, I bought a Dodge Challenger back in 2008. Great car, looks amazing.
But after a few months I had issues right out of the gate. and once the warranty ran out I was screwed.
These problems didn't warrant a recall, but they were annoying.
Anyway, I wouldn't expect Dodge to fix everything after the warranty has run out. I'd buy a new car.
And yes I might buy a Ford instead, so I do see your point.

However, I can honestly say, Cakewalk has made great strides and improvements. The company has changed hands a few times and still, we see the Sonar line getting better and better all the time.
X3 was a very stable daw for me, actually so was X2 and X1 (X1 not so much at first until the updates).

We can only go back so far to complain about something like this.
Im not complaining about my 2008 Dodge. But if my 2015 Dodge had problems I would be complaining.
Yes, I bought another Dodge, you might ask why ? Because even though I wasn't happy with my Challenger, I still love Dodge cars and I believe in them. My 2015 Dodge has been great. You win some you lose some.

I hear you Chuck, but who else sells professional software with only a 12 month warranty and then no free updates to the bugs? If you had something wrong with your Mopar, and you submitted the problem before the warranty expired they would have to fix that problem. I submitted the midi problem way before the warranty was expired like maybe the first month or week after the version was updated or patched, before they had this one year limitations, and it never was fixed. It wasn't like it was intermittent, it never worked right, it was only one problem they never fixed. I agree with what you said about X1-X3, I met the Cakewalk guys down at Manny's one year and knew their names then. I understand 100% what you said about your Charger, I was a Richard Petty and Mopar fan. But did you bring your car back from the shop and what you complained about never worked while it was under warranty? That's the difference, while I was under warranty it NEVER was fixed. On the updates, or patches it never was fixed except once and the next patch screwed it up again. Look Sonar is great but I haven't used their plug-ins in years. I buy at least $2000 worth of plug-ins a year from everyone else, audio, midi and effects. I haven't seen a feature on Platinum since I retired in 2009 that I use. I use Sonar as my interface between my Presonus 32.4.2 mixer, and 32 channels of audio from my Motu 24AO and 8 channels from my Behringher AD8200. I do not use any effects with Sonar components, I just use it to record and playback and the audio tracks, and use some audio plug-ins outputs, from midi inputs. One time I used the Sonar compressors, and other effects, now zero. Not worth $250 to just use the midi correctly that never was fixed while I was under warranty. I remember paying $99, $149 for updates, but they had some kind of unique plug-in or something. I haven't seen any new feature I could use or has a wow factor. I see they finally have MP3, but that only because as ASCAP informed me the developers or company that does MP3's shut down because the competition had better encoders and the couldn't keep up. I even bought a portable Hi-def player to play FLAC and other HD audio files. I found out that unless the audio was recorded at 192k the MP3 files don't sound to me any better the oversized FLAC files. Thanks for taking the time to respond. Again I understand warranties, but Cakewalk never respected that I had this problem for years while I was under warranty.

I'm sorry to hear about your issues Rich. I also hear what your saying and agree with some of it.

To finish the story about my charger, yes I was at the dodge dealership telling them of a problem I was having with the car not starting at random times. They kept saying.. We cant find anything wrong with it.
Low and behold 3 months after that warranty ran out the car wouldn't start at all. They said it was my computer (Cars Computer) needed to be replaced. it was 700 for the part and 500 for the labor.
I told them I had been complaining about this so they met me half way (I paid 700 for the part, the did the labor for free).

Back to sonar. Ripple editing is working great and Sonar has launched a lot of free stuff and plug ins lately. So some things take time to get fixed. Ask the staff view people :-)

Hope everything works out for you.
