I got a brand new vdrum setup that I run directly into Superior Drummer...LOVE IT!  The issue I was having is that when I have the phones on to play and record the vdrums they sound much lower in the mix than they do when I'm sitting in front of my monitors.  I have them going to their own drum buss and then to the master buss but turning them up loud enough in the cans causes them to clip.  I decided to create a "pre" master buss.  I routed everything in the song to the pre-buss, except the drums.  I turn down the pre-buss and leave the drums buss to the master alone.  It works great.
 
So ... all instruments to the pre -> to the master
vdrums to drum buss -> to the master
 
Turn down the pre and leave the drums alone.
 
What say you?

If you're recording electronic drums, why use headphones at all? There's no danger of spillage from monitors into drum mics because there are no drum mics.

Another option might be to monitor the V drums directly through the interface, though if you're using them just to generate MIDI that plays a drum sampler/VST then obviously that wouldn't work unless you are happy hearing the v drum module when tracking rather than the samples.

I use the headphones because there is a build up of bass where I have to set up the vdrums.  The headphones cleans that up a bit.  Yeah, I like the sound of Superior Drummer much better than the vdrums module...personal taste.

I have a Pre-Master buss on all of my projects.
 
It can be extremely useful for all sorts of applications.

i do this all the time.
 
you want your 'recorded' signal routed to a drum buss, and that routed to master,
then you can create a buss for everything else to go to, to be able to adjust the over all level of the other pre-recorded music.
 
if you use sub busses, it's as easy as just temporarily routing every buss except master, to a 'temp' or 'background' buss, and route that directly to the sound card....
 
then you have total control of the levels for the drumming monitoring in the cans, 
without messing with any of the other mix elements.
 
re-route all the busses back to 'master' after you are done tracking.
 
 

I also use a pre-master buss for everything, allowing me to put Sample Magic's    Magic AB on the Master, where I can then access and listen to reference tunes without the influence of any FX I may have on the project.
