There is a large thread on the gearslutz forum about MOTU USB interfaces and not working or not working properly with USB 3.0.

My MOTU 896Mk3 Hybrid, as I have previously mentioned on this forum, is one of those that works "flakey" with USB 3.0.  With USB 2.0 or Firewire its rock solid.  Its not Windows 10 that is the problem, but the MOTU and/or drivers.  My MOTU did not work properly in Win 7 either (same driver).

Why is  the driver crashing only when I use 44.1 khz?
I can play for hrs on 48khz no crashes.
If I had the time I would just change all the projects to 48khz.
Why 44.1khz = crash .
Peace

What bit rate are you using?

I echo Rob - and his points are well worth looking into.

I am not having any kind of problem whatsoever with its bigger brother, the 1248.  At any bit rate.   I am current on the latest Windows 10 patch.  I am current on Sonar Platinum.  I am current on all firmware including the MOTU 1248, the MOTU AVB switch, the RM32AI and the CS18AI.  You can see my machine in the signature.

I did have a problem with dropouts caused by windows anti virus AND Windows updates - so I keep the PC unconnected from the internet except for updates and only with well trusted websites.  The major source of contention was disk utilization, the updates would PEG my os disk. MOTU did have a few driver issues early on, but they have been worked out as of the release for Thunderbolt.  I found the MOTU phone support reps very responsive and they knew their way around WIN 10 well.  It may be beneficial to contact them and see what they might be able to do to help.

I can run the MOTU configuration in USB2 or Thunderbolt.   I run between 20 and 30 tracks with many VST effects on each project with the thread meters rarely going over 20%.

I can assure you that MOTU 1248 works very well for me. However,  so does the RM32AI - both, flawless in the past 6 months.

OK Then First Thanks everybody for the help.
My Problem is that I cannot make it work with a particular laptop bought a year and a half ago for this purpose, the Acer aspire V5-591G.
On my son`s  i3 Toshiba and an old PC I have it`s working good except that every while it loses connection with usb, still not good but it doesn`t happen very often and if i just open preferences in sonar and press ok it will restart the driver.
I`m using it for live performance with Playlist in sonar  and have both 44.1 and 48 khz projects, very small projects,2 to 4 tracks max ,so load is not an issue.
On the Acer i could play the 48khz projects for hrs without a crash but as soon as go to 44.1 khz it will crash, sometimes immeditly sometimes after a few minutes of playback.
I tried all of those advices Rob gave me but no joy.
It must be a problem with this particular model, there is no way in the bios to switch off usb 3.0 cause i have a feeling that that would fix it on this particular model. When i try ti disable it from the device manager even the 1 usb 2.0 port it has will be disabled,so i have no way of disabling usb 3.0 in it.
And yes Rob on usb 2.0 it crashes less often than on usb 3.0.
Any info is greatly appr.
Thanks again
Peace

Update.
Well after some more testing and some help from you guys,i have made these conclusions on the Motu 624.

1 st it works perfect on usb 2.0 on my older machines , an 8 year old pc quod core something and an i3 toshiba satillite Laptop 5 years old.No crashes change in sample rate no problems at all.

2 nd what ever i tried it never works for long periods on my Acer aspire V5-591G , this is like a year and a half old laptop very powerful with usb 3.0 Intel chipset.

3 rd I will wait a bit cause I found a few other poeple in my exact sitution where for some reason the Motu Audio driver did not work on certain usb 3.0 chipsets no matter what they did. When I was reading thier results where exactly like mine even with a differnt brand chipset.
It`s either it works immidiatly or other wise no go.

Peace

Oh Yes Rob that`s my main Laptop this last year and a half,
I used and still is The Yamaha 01v96i ,the Avid solo and steinberg small one (similar to the Avid)  ,and they all work perfect.
I`m gonna wait a bit maybe Motu will find the source of the problem cause they have a problem with certain chipsets.
Meanwhile I can still enjoy and use this great sound card on my son`s Toshiba on USB 2.0
Thanks Rob for the help that`s why I like this forum cause everybody is ready to help.
Peace

May be a long shot but try setting the drivers Compatibility Mode to a Windows version known to work.
