Any time I use these functions, I get 5-100 iterations pasted ALL OVER my project. A song 120 measures long within minutes becomes 10,000 measures long.

AND
My customer wants to know why I need an hour and a half to delete the trash (WITHOUT DELETENG NEEDED STUFF!!!)
Very embarrassing with him looking over my shoulder.
A one hour project is taking days to complete.

Any ideas why this is occurring?

My only guess would be that you may be selecting more than just the clip you want to copy.
I've never experienced what I think you're dealing with.

My guess is Preferences > Customization > Editing "What to do with existing material:" is set to "Slide Over Old to Make Room." If this is the case, change the value to one of the other two options. This is a very old bug.

FWIW
Sometimes it pays to sit down with sample projects and just explore things with and or without the manual at hand , when you have downtime (no clients present). It's a form of mix engineer practice which cost "you" nothing but time.
No offence intended, but there is a difference between DAW error and user error. And the client rightfully so should be asking why this is taking so long, without it being blamed on the DAW. That's why it pays to practice what seems like mundane or trivial functions.

Good idea, that won't have a learning curve at all.

If what scook said isn't the issue and only you experience a problem, others can't help you because the problem is specific to you. As to Pro Tools, you might want to do some due diligence.
