  • Can Anyone Help Me Get This Snare Sound?

It seems very, very simple at first listen. But, it's not (at least to my crappy ears). The sound just hits like no body's business. I've got tons of drum samples, but nothing seems to really have the same impact. I know it's just not the sample, it's the processing as well. Can any of you advise on what to do to get my snare to sound like that process wise? Also, if you know where I can get that sample  (or something close ), that would help too. I tried to make it in Maschine's drum synth, but I'm really bad at sound design. ...lol
Here's the song:

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like heavy compression on the snare to me.

Yeah, it's definitely there. But, it's more on that snare than that. I've compressed the hell out pf mine and it's still not "popping" like that one.

I'm no expert on this but it sounds gated as well as having a delay in there too. Certainly has the compression cranked. It's also likely layered for thickness.

Seems like the snare is triggering a white noise sample to me. Ugh song though lol

There are multiple layered samples in there: handclaps, white noise and a gated snare sample boosted around 200 Hz. Probably lifted straight from some electronic drum sample library. I'm pretty sure no acoustic instruments were harmed in the making of that song.

Thanks for the input. I'm going to experiment with using a gate and delay.

Gonna' try that white noise in there. Thanks for the advice.

But, for real; how could you not love that song? ...lol. All jokes aside, I know I'm in the minority when it comes to songs like this. I'm a sucker for slickly produced, uber catchy, pop confection. For me it's the hardest style to get right on my own. Yet, I still reach. ...lol

Thanks! I'm going to layer some of my old Roland sounding drum sound with a clap and try all the other sugestion you guys have given me and see if I can get close.

Right now I'm a huge fan of Max Martin's (the guy who produced and co-wrote the song) production work. So very simple sounding elements but they sound huge. I'm also a big fan Nile Rodgers. Listening to those old Chic tunes and Max Martin stuff and trying to emulate some of those production techniques and apply to them to my own pruductions is my goal. I want my songs to have that huge, polished pop sound. Yet, still be funky. Sometimes my stuff sounds "cheap" to me.

JMO that's about the crappiest snare I've ever heard, but if you find out how to get it and it works for you, right on.
