Interesting thread, guys.

just last night I had the same issue 3 times that Sonar "lost connection to its audio engine", meaning the song kept playing but Sonar entered the non-responsives state. playback was fine but could no longer be stopped neither from keyboard nor control surface.

I have the inverse of that Rob, where I can start and stop playback and the transport moves as it should, however only a small section of completely random audio samples are played. Really weird. The saving grace is that the project can be saved and reopened and plays correctly without issue after reopening. I don't even have to restart Sonar. Still unusable in a live performance situation though, hence the rollback.

FWIW Rob, as I know you also use Sonar live, if you do roll back any project that was saved using the latest versions of sonar, upon opening in an earlier version (my stable choice is 2016-09) will see any archived track feeding a disconnected VST synth as a missing audio output upon loading. Cancelling the dialogue and resaving the project rectifies the issue. I suspect the ill fated attempt to have Sonar recognise outputs on different systems a few updates back is to blame.

"Slightly disturbingly, a simple rollback didnt rectify the issue.  I had to reload a disc image I took before updating to return my system to normal operations. "

Tenfoot that could easily point to something in the OS not Sonar.
Peace

If you rolled back and also rebuilt the aud.ini file in Sonar, then it would most likely narrow this down to either the audio drivers or the OS, and rule out Sonar.

Thanks for the ideas guys.
In the interest of good science, after an issue free day in the rehearsal room after rolling back I reinstalled the latest Sonar and the problem returned. The PC is offline. The only change was Sonar. I understand there are many variables in the driver/os/software environment, but make of that what you will.

I have learned through hard experience that when an issue arrises and it is suggested it must be something other than Sonar, I hold out for a couple of updates and the issue that wasn't sonar dissappears:)

Tenfoot you dont even know how important is your last tread for me.
Now I know for sure that I have two problems and I can separate them.
They both stop the audio driver , cause you know I have just bought this soundcard ten days ago.
Infact i rolled back to 2016.09 on the small i3 Toshiba Laptop and motu 624 is working as it should,no crashes at all.
Now all i have to solve is the issue of the usb 3.0 on my Acer cause that is my work horse.
Thanks man.
Peace

Great news maltastudio! So fustrating when new toys don't work:(
Like you I use Sonar for live performance, so it is always good to have a trusty solid release on your stage system to fall back on. I love that Sonar are pushing out new features, but they do come at a price.

I'm going to be using Home Studio for this very reason. For $50 it also might be a solution for you guys. HS is rock solid so far and no reason it cannot play anything done in SPLAT.
I will be doing a test run in a couple of weeks so will soon find out.

I put forth on another thread if this problem started (at least for me) when they introduced the note chase function. I still have yet to roll back to the version before that feature. Not sure which rev, but I think it was before 2017. In fairness, it happens so random that odds are it isn't the note chase, and has happened on projects with both audio and MIDI.

Interesting Johnny. I wonder though is there much difference in the playlist code?

I don't mean to give the wrong impression about Platinum playlist - it is rock solid and I have been using it live in each flagship version of Cakewalk software for decades.  It is just susseptible to the niggles of the rolling update model introducing elements that don't sit well on some systems and with certain drivers. The beauty of the model is you can roll back to a version that is solid.

Haha - I didn't even notice the date Chuck. It did strike me as unusual that you were having issues.  That will teach me to browse the forum over morning coffee without my glasses on!
