Since somebody resurrected this thread, let me add a follow-up comment.  In the end, I realized I had become victim of a rookie mistake.  This was a long piece (close to 13 minutes).  I started mixing at the beginning.  Had I done it right and started with the most intense section and worked out from there, all of my problems would have been addressed without the need for limiters on multiple tracks.  By the time I got to the big moment, I was already maxed out.

It's clear I've got to go back and remix the whole thing.  Next time I'll know!!!

you should never use limiters to address MIX issues..

you use limiters to impart color, to tame individual levels to consistency,
and all this should be done on a track by track level BEFORE mixing.

for example, if you know you want a slammed drum track, you can go ahead and mix the kit, throw a nice limiter on the drum buss, and crush it...

but if you know that you only want the overheads crushed,
then you have to really start mapping these things out in your head before you get to the point that you've painted yourself into a corner.

at that point, strip everything out, bring all your faders down,
and start over.

the end result is worth the effort.
