The announcement should have been "Prices going up May 1st - Update Now!"

Isn't that really what this is about? And what happened to the Platinum Only perks?

We also need to retrain everyone away from thinking about "annuals" or "memberships" - we don't really have a subscription model.

Fair enough. So the license agreement in the user guide will be getting an update too.

After banging the idea of membership into our heads for 2 years.

how will this affect steam editions?

Not much, we've already been piloting similar flatter/simpler price system since December.

We'll have a small FAQ and Blog post tomorrow morning.

Pricing will be similar to direct, but in the 'Season Pass' model instead of the 'Membership" one.

Is there any possibility of ever bringing back "Lifetime updates" ?
I know a few friends that missed the offer and would like to take advantage of it.
I know some might not agree with it (because it was a special offer / limited time) but it would really help those users and also bring in more sales.

Possible, but not likely. We ran the offer for 6 months, which is quite a long time.

I understand. 6 months was very fair. no complaints here.

Thank you for the reply.

Well so far, it's been pretty peaceful.  I have 2 good friends that are going to be very unhappy,  probably around 6pm CDT.

About what?

As said, not much is changing but there is a small warning here that if your still hanging on to an old version and for some crazy reason did't take the bait with lifetime updates and now don't pay attention and miss this last window, you'll have no grounds for grumbling after May 1st.

They have made Sonar very affordable over these last few years. I would have never paid $500 for Any DAW.  But piece by piece, from X1 LE to  Plat they have me set for a long ride.  It's software. It will work for another 5-10 years say, without any updates but I get those too, such a deal and I didn't even ask for one.

X1LE free with Roland Keyboard.
X3 Studio Upgrade from LE $99
Professional  Upgrade from X3 studio Jan 2015  $129     ( say's original full price $209 can)
Platinum  Lifetime upgrade  $ 229 Can..  Aug 2016   ( EDIT:  I was wrong about this price I just looked it up.)
Total  $457 spread out over 4 years so wasn't painful.

But those deals I got are now possibly never to be seen again.

Not mentioned here is upgrading from Say X3 LE which I believe is what comes free with Tascam products now.

Wow, you didn't have another stage between Professional and Plat lifetime for $149?

The upgrade from Pro to Plat should have been about $120 on one of the better sales alone.  Then the upgrade from Producer to Plat lifetime should have been $170 or so.

$377 seems pretty good from X1LE to full blown lifer.
As for never, this industry is so competitive I don't believe in never.

The Grim
lifetime updates for $99 was possibly one of the best deals in memory, plus the no 'thought required' to press the buy button was a bonus  and i had already switched to another daw at that time . . . to good a bargain to pass up
