  • How to make plugins active while recording?

Hi,

Is there a way to make plugins "active" while recording. I want to try applying some eq/compression to vocals to remove harshness that I can't seem to remove after recording. It would be nice to reduce while recording and not have to deal with it later.

Thanx, Frederick

PS I use Platinum and a Roland Octa-capture, Win 10 and a fast PC

To record the affected signal either use a send or output the track to an aux track and record the aux track. It might be a good idea to record the dry and aux track just in case.

Thanx for the info. Can you detail the settings? Say I have a vocal going into track 1. You say I can send it to another track with the plugin "active" while simultaneously recording it onto track one with no plugin? I'm not sure how to set that up, can you send a picture?

Thanx, Frederick

Here is some additional information about aux tracks http://www.cakewalk.com/Documentation?product=SONAR&language=3&help=Mixing.14.html#1750199

To record the dry and aux track at the same time, click the record button on each track the hit the record button in the transport.

FWIW, there is absolutely no way these plugins do anything different during recording than they do after recording. They're not analog processors, the same audio still hits your AD converters.

Thanx. I found this within that document. Hope it works. I think I had tried this earlier but the effected sound wasn't recorded on the aux track for some reason. Will this work for Pro Channel FX or recording the TH3 guitar plugin?

To record an audio track that contains effects
1.
Insert the desired time-based plug-in effect(s) in the effect bin on the audio track.

2.
Click the audio track’s Output control and select New Aux Track on the pop-up menu.

3.
Arm the Aux track for recording. For details, see Arming tracks for recording.

4.
Begin recording. For details, see To Record Audio.

OK, I can record the FX now but I can't seem to hear the direct vocal AND record the FX simultaneously which results in annoying latency. It appears that BOTH echo buttons on tracks 1 and 2 must be active in order for the FX to be recorded. Is there a way to hear the clean, direct vocal, while also recording the FX on the aux track?

Progress being made. I think I stumbled upon how to record the FX, AND get rid of the latency. On the aux track, simply pull the fader all the way down to mute the FX while recording. It's still present and recording but you won't hear it. I further discovered that I was able to record the built-in Pro Channel FX as well as third-party FX dropped into the FX bin. Now I can hopefully get rid of a bit of harshness as I record and not have to put an outboard EQ into the signal chain.

Actually, I spent some bucks last year and bought a Neumann TLM 103 and a "pro" preamp, UA LA-610 MkII, that does have some EQ tweaking ability but not in the range of vocal harshness. The UA has EQ on the extreme low end (200 HZ and lower) and on the high end (4.5khz and higher) but nothing in the middle where vocal "harshness" resides, around 1 to 2 k. I looked into trading it in for one of those even more expensive Avalons with sweepable EQs but thought I'd first see if I could tweak from within Sonar, and I'm glad I can. Hopefully the results will be pleasant to my ears.

Again, if this is your preferred process that's fine, but those plugins aren't doing anything different during recording than they would do after recording.

Unless there's a VERY good reason for recording in this way, you'd be better off leaving ALL Fx processing decisions until the mix stage - AFTER everything is recorded.

Like Sander says, everything you record will not be modified in any way by your Fx - SONAR only records the dry tracks from your microphone/interface.
