So these pop songs like FIGHT SONG by ..someone.. and even the chorus to "too late to apologize" are just phenomenal.  These folks have decent voices but the technique for the mix is what makes it for me.  So how do I get that PHAT chorus vocal like taylor swift WILDEST DREAMS  , normally its during the chorus "wildest dreams up high".  Doubling I know, any other known tips.  My doubling mixing never sounds like that. If I could make my clients sounds that way....Id be in business. ;)

so who is mixing and mastering for Taylor and Miss Cyrus now?  I want to know the secrets. ;) I won't tell anyone.

There are no secrets, just a lot of hard work to learn what is essentially a craft.  Most of what you are hearing is simply a good mic in a great room w/ a great singer.  Isn't she supposed to use an Avetone?   It is pretty dry except on the choruses and some pop out phrases where they double/triple record in spots and don't bother to try to line up the takes (yes, imperfection is art, too).  That is Ms. Swift, too, I imagine.  Then slather on the reverb (tailored for her voice - intended pun there) at those points and others, which pops out the phrases and lines even tho reverb usually buries the reverbed in the back.  But using it judiciously draws your ear to the effect and line of what is a very articulate voice.  Those crackles in her voice are something singers can either do or not, and do right or not.  When they can use them for emphasis, it is magic.  When they can't, it sounds like a mistake.  Like jazz and doing the wrong note at the right time.

a booth, helps eliminate room sound.

a great mic...... is key.

I gave a listen to Wildest Dreams, which I'd never heard before. What I hear there is a) a really good microphone in a treated vocal booth, b) double- or maybe even triple-tracked chorus, c) heavy compression, probably an opto, d) some high-end reverb, and e) a skilled hand on the pitch correction and de-essing.

In short, top-shelf gear and highly-skilled engineering. Of course, it helps the gal can sing.

If you want to achieve that effect on a budget, start with double-tracking the vocal with at least some fiberglass panels around the microphone and singer to make it as dry as possible. After that, it's all about practice, practice, practice. No big secrets, just GOBS of little ones.

I hope all this info helps. It has for me.

Parallel Compression is your friend. Learn all you can about it. Especially for drums and vocals. It's key to getting that upfront sound.

This guy uses some good techniques. I think he over does them, though. Still good to learn for what you want.
