it becomes enabled, but the problem here is that this seems to be global for any track.   I want to set a CC on the fly.  And what if CC 57 is a filter cutoff for one synth but a filter resonance on another?

You're right about that.  It would be good if we could define controller names for each softsynth.  Hardware synths have their own instrument definition tables.  Softsyths should have them too.

I notice that for Rapture Pro there are definitions for the NRPN names, but those must be programmed i the VST itself somehow....

I think the whole "instrument definition" thing in Sonar needs a major overhaul
