  • Cannot get Tascam US2X2 to work with SONAR Artist

Here is the situation:
1. I am working with someone long distance.
2. I told him to use SONAR so we are more compatible. He agreed to use SONAR Artist and purchase a Tascam US2X2.
3. I remote in to help him get up and running (he is not technical at ALL)
4. I install latest driver etc... Cannot get anything to work as a tech savvy seasoned SONAR user.
5. Made a quick off-the-cuff video to show the issue.
6. Did not feel like loading up to YouTube so I will provide a direct link to my hosting site.

Any ideas on what is going on with this? I would be most grateful to get this going as soon as possible, but I am perplexed at the moment. Thank you all in advance for any help you can offer.

Hi, Charles.

Which version of Windows?
Is the 2X2 connected to a USB 3 port? That could cause some issues in some cases.
Try a different USB port and / or cable?
All the best.

Charles make sure that when he installed the drivers (typically he is asked to plug the unit in half way/at the end of the driver installation) make sure he is plugging back in to that same USB port, not using a different USB port every time.
As Ken mentioned: make sure its a USB 2 port if it doesn't support USB 3.

Then I would try setting it up for ASIO, rebooting Sonar and seeing if that makes a difference.
Sometimes a reboot is needed for Sonar to see the Device.

Thanks for the replies.
Ken: He is on Windows 10. He is using the cable that came with the US 2X2. I am 800 miles away so I can't tell which USB port he is using. I did tell him to make sure it was a USB 2 port and he has no idea what I'm talking about. I tried to have him show me his setup through Skype, but his camera is so blurry I can't tell. I will tell him to try every USB port there is, I suppose that is the next step.

chuckebaby: I was the one installing the driver via a remote session through Team Viewer. I do think he had the USB cable plugged in the whole time. I switched back and forth from ASIO to everything else with mulitple reboots all to no avail. I wonder of there might be something in his specific configuration on his computer or something...

USB2 is any non-blue port.

If the unit was plugged in before the drivers were installed, that'll mess things up for sure.  Best to have him unplug the 2x2, then you remotely do a complete uninstall of the drivers, then reinstall them and have him plug it in when it tells you to.  If it doesn't tell you to, then safest route is to finish the install, reboot the system, then plug in the 2x2.

Thanks JonD. We'll try that shortly.

Also tell him not to be impatient. When you plug in a US- interface after being told to plug it in, it may take a few seconds for Windows to recognize it.

I use the 2x2 and 4x4 at the office and a 20x20 in my main studio without problems, so hopefully sorting things out with the USB ports and following the instructions exactly will take care of things. Also, make sure the unit has been updated with the latest firmware.

In the video I see that the Tascam is on the list when you showed WDM mode but it was not checked, some other device was checked.
And if you keep switching modes and do not re start Sonar it will get a bit messed up.

Re boot the computer.
Go to windows audio settings and make sure the Tascam is showing, In my case it is the default .
Now open Sonar and select ASIO and check the driver settings making sure only the Tascam is selected.
It should work.

The advice about installing Tascam drivers is correct, you really need to do them properly and in sequence. I think the new models work with both USB 3 and 2 but yes only use the same port.

Today was my next opportunity to try again. I uninstalled all Tascam everything, rebooted, installed a fresh Tascam driver. Deleted the aud.ini file. Plugged in the Tascam (after the drivers were fully installed of course) and all the same exact problems.

This is absolutely insane. I have never had such a miserable time ever in anything related to audio hardware/software. I am no beginner either in hardware or software. Of course, since I am doing all this long distance I may be missing something obvious that I cannot see (due to not being physically present.)

Anyway, the guy is going to mail me the Tascam so I can try making it work on my own gear. If it works for me here, I can only conclude that something in his computer config is preventing the Tascam from working for him.

If it doesn't work for me, then perhaps the Tascam is broken and he/we are out of luck. I will buy some other interface and send it to him...

Any other ideas?
