With my new found love of converting real bass tracks into midi using the drag and drop Melodyne trick I though a thread talking about Bass VST's would be handy.

I'd prefer if we stick to traditional Electric Bass and for sure good Upright too. Please no synth Bass, I think we are well covered there. Don't get me wrong, I love a good fat synth bass, But right now I'm looking for the real deal.

As it is I'm happy enough with a custom patch using the SI Bass.  So that's very close to what I use as an example of traditional Bass Sounds. It works perfectly for my Backing tracks and comes through the PA amazingly close to a perfect tone and punch. As a long time live sound guy I know what I want and this is now what I've committed over 50 songs to, so would be hard to turn back.
But as much as I'm happy camper for that use, it don't cut it for real recordings and I even wonder if anything will?

What's your favorite go to bass, Freebies ??  :)

spectrasonics trilian, ik's modo bass is good, but i personally prefer trilian

but i prefer to play the bass through bias fx pro's bass amps, sounds simply gorgeous and far above the likes of mark studio 2 (mark bass 2) and ik's ampeg svx or any other bass amp sim i have, which is practically everything available software wise, but when i want to use a bass vsti, i'll use trilian

Manytone ManyBass is a good one - reasonable price. But my go to basses at the mo are the ones in Sampletank 3. Only the acoustics let it down.

isn't the manytone stuff still 32 bit? a lot of folk don't like messing with 32bit plugs these days. I have owned all the manytone stuff for years but haven't bothered with them since going 64bit, last i checked they were still 32 bit

[edit] just read this response from paul of manytone to a question about 64bit

Hi guys
I do care very much about this issue but unfortunately I have not been able to get 64bit versions. Sorry guys but it is not looking good at this point. Still looking into a few options however it is not an easy thing to accomplish. Wish I could have better news.
Please try to enjoy the 32-bit versions as at least they are bug free and work with a bit bridge.
Paul

For an upright, I like Rapture Session's Bass Guitar patch "Full Acoustic". It has a lot of growl.

Cheers, Peter.

For ANY bass, the best is without a doubt Spectrasonics Trilian.
Period.

S1 is the only bass I know of in this day and age that is not velocity sensitive.

+1 for Spectrasonics Trillian.  The old spectrasonics Trilogy was also the best of it's day.

I've wondered about ample sounds Upright. One of the criticisms of Amplesounds was the transients made it sound like it had a latency. I believe they responded to this with some changes. Being it's not real time performance, but Audio to Midi created, it wouldn't have the same problem.
