What would be the purpose for having audio tracks in the PRV, considering PRV is ONLY about editing MIDI (unless I have missed something basic)?

It seems to me that the user should not have to filter out things that have no reason for being there in the first place.

The problem here is... your only thinking about the way you work and not others. The filter is also for other midi tracks, not just audio tracks.

However, the purpose of having audio tracks in the PRV is so you can use the Mute/Solo buttons on audio tracks while not having to leave the PRV area to Mute/Solo tracks.
This is a great feature for some of us (Like myself) who work with Audio and Midi and need to isolate 1 or 2 tracks along with a midi track to duplicate/synch midi to audio.

For example: I have a Audio track: Stringed bass line I recorded. Now im trying to write a midi line to go along with it. By soling the Bass (Audio) track, I can hear just the Bass audio along with the midi track im working on. This way I don't have to collapse the PRV and use Track view every time I want to solo something.

There seems to be some misunderstandings here that can easily be solved by reading the Documentation about the new PRV changes.
I know personally, It's the first thing I do every time an update is released. It avoids confusion not only in our own work space but also here in the forums.

Sorry if this has already been posted (I don't see a mention of it yet)
I can't display multiple tracks in the new PRV when one of them is using a drum map. I use this all the time to line up bass notes with drums (using a drum map).
If I change my drum track from a drum map to a normal output - it works fine.

EDIT: I found it! You have to enable in "View -> show/hide drum pane"

I also have audio tracks in the PRV for said reasons and for reference control when editing notes against 2 different tracks... which is what PRV is for.

The sharp-flat color changes can't be (shouldn't be) on the notes themselves as that's already used for velocity variances.

I'm with cparmalee on just showing MIDI tracks in the PRV view-but-as chuckebaby and soens point out, they like having audio tracks in the PRV. This change may help both camps.

I'd find it help full to be able to have a choice such as: "Show All" and "Show MIDI Only". As it is now, to just show MIDI tracks one would have to go through all the tracks and select then use the filter to just show MIDI (or audio for that matter.)

Another problem for me is that everything I've Archived in the Track View- the individual tracks or tracks in  a folder, is listed as an individual track in the PRV track window. As many do, to reduce clutter in the Track View  you'd use the Track Manager to hide these Archived folders/tracks.But hiding archived tracks or folders does not hide any archived tracks in the PRV Track View. It shows every track active or Archived!

Lastly, there is no folder hierarchy in the PRV TV-only tracks. As it is now, if I pick a track that's in the PRV TV, the corresponding track in the main TV may not be seen. It can be buried in a collapsed folder, or an an Archived folder. So now I have to start opening folders to find that track.....this does not work.

I'd like to see any tracks or folders Archived in the Track View hidden in the PRV TV also.

About my question 3: "How to display multiple controllers? The option is inaccessible", any help?

The filter function isn't so intuitive. The filter button on each track has a bad tooltip.  It says "Record".  That button was probably copied from elsewhere. Fixing that will make the feature more intuitive.

Any changes in the PRV majorly affect the workflow of many people, Cakewalk needs to tread carefully here... :)

First: I agree with the previous post, the filter feature is not a very intuitive replacement for the Pick Tracks dialog box found in previous versions.

Showing all tracks by default in the PRV track pane unfortunately makes the track pane list very messy, which disturbs me visually. And on my system it slightly slows down the opening of the PRV window when all tracks are displayed - I can see the track list being built from top to bottom...

PRV feature suggestions
  • Do not show all tracks by default in the PRV track pane, only show the track you selected in the Track View with an active filter.
    • Or at least: if you open the PRV with multiple tracks selected in the Track View (ALT + 3) - please make it so that the selected tracks are shown using an active filter. This reduces clutter in the PRV track pane, and if you want more tracks, you remove the filter. This would be analoguous to opening the Pick Tracks window in previous versions.
  • When the PRV view is already open: if you select a new track in the Track View and press ALT + 3, please scroll the PRV track pane vertically to the new selected track.
  • The new PRV track pane requires more horizontal screen estate than before, leaving less space to edit notes. Please make the track pane design responsive so that the M, S, R & filter buttons move to a second row (all tracks had two rows in previous versions) when the track pane width is reduced.
Edit: It feels like the new PRV features will be honed and matured in the upcoming releeases so I'm rolling back to 2017.01 while I wait...

Cakewalk - thanks for focusing on the MIDI side! If we put as much focus on this as on comping enhancements, the PRV will be amazing in no time! ;)

Good post cyberzip ...

Can anyone do a test and verify that unticking a color on a track and then typing V still inverts the selection and then shows ONLY the original track that had it's color unticked?
And then typing A once again shows all tracks?

Thank you!

Solved. Not possible in 2017.03

So far the new PRV idea looks like a big fail designed by people who never actually use it.

I wouldn't say that.  There are some loose ends that need to be cleaned up, but I found the previous PRV 100% unusable for most of my projects because it was impossible for me to deal with multiple controllers.  The new one is a big improvement, but just a little tedious here and there. I can't see any advantage in go back to an earlier release.

Clicking on "View/Show Multiple Lanes" in the PRV works for me, unless I'm misunderstanding your question. I can display one controller lane or by selecting show multiple lanes, I can display any or all of the controller lanes that I desire.
