Thanks for clearing that up. I was concerned ... you know how a band romance bromance can strain relations with other band members.
Hi Dave - that's a great point you've raised.
First off - as a band, and as a group of very good friends, we work together on CHB tunes under an unwritten code of conduct that ensures any development of, and the ultimate release of, a project is very much a self-contained and unanimous process (although we have asked for, and gratefully and readily accepted, some great advice from other forum members - you guys know who you are
). Furthermore, we have no 'leader', nor is there any (real or perceived) order of 'importance' within the band.
As to side projects, be they solo endeavours or collaborations between CHB members and/or with others, there is no 'pressure' applied whatsoever for any of us not to work on such projects.
Ad both Jon and Ed have done quite recently in this forum, I too have submitted music that has nothing to do with any CHB project. I would feel very constrained if everything I write
had to be submitted to the other guys as a potential CHB project.
However,
most of the material I have been writing of late (music only - I don't submit lyrics and/or vocal melodies) is composed
deliberately to include parts ready-made for the CHB. Plus, the beauty of this arrangement is that I know the other guys will take my outline and ideas and then make each part their own.
Although I have been credited with writing the music for two of our released songs (
Bow Before Asparapuss &
Hall Of The Mountain Bing), the truth is that:
- Jon took my basic drum loops and morphed them into professional drum tracks
- Ed took my root-note bass lines and made them talk
- Grant put together a guitar solo (for Moutain Bing) that I couldn't play if I had eight fingers on my fretting hand!
- Alex (both songs) and Paul (Asparapuss) added amazing synth parts that were perfectly constructed in their context in the tunes
- Bo (Space Cowboy) produced incredible vocal performances on both
- Bo and Ed wrote the lyrics that just complement the song titles so perfectly
I've never had the privilege of working with such a talented and affable group of guys, and if anything, the 'outside' solo and collaboration stuff, seems to actually strengthen our bond as a band. In other words, producing (any) music seems to make us all better at what we do, and once we hanker down to work on something as a band, the excitement (and indeed the aspiration not to let anyone else down) seems to channel our efforts into a finished song that is greater than the sum of our individual contributions.
Steve
PS: Dave, these are strictly my personal views - I would never presume to speak on behalf of the CHB or any of its individual members.
