Hi all

I was hopeing to ask what are your thoughts on sonar courses ? I am thinking it would be good to do some but I dont know where to start.

What would you recomend as an online course  ?

I dont have the funds to become a full time sound production student and my interest is sonar not pro tools or anything else but  the collages in my area use pro tools.

I live in scotland and I dont think there is any courses in this country so I think my best bet might be an online course.

whats your thoughts ?

Thanks for any advice

Berklee School of Music offers an online course in Sonar.  I have not seen it but I have taken 2 other online courses there and found it to be an excellent program. (a bit on the expensive side though)

Our resident forum guru CJ may have other options for you.

Or, you could read the manual (this step is optional for many people apparently) and then log into the forums everyday and ask questions when you are stuck.

But ya, an organized instruction course will get you where you want to go alot faster.
Good luck

I do like the look of the Berklee one but like you say it is a bit on the expensive side.

Manual is always a good Idea and is always right next to me in the studio.

The forum here is good every one helps a lot some times things get a bit over whelming since I am so new to it all

I work better with screen prints videos and some one takeing the time to talk me through something

I was lucky enough to come in to some money and used it all to get a VS-700 because I had always wanted to learn to record and now I feel I should be makeing the most of it so thought best way to go would be a course.

I hope CJ you talk about jumps in with some ideas

hope CJ you talk about jumps in with some ideas

I did in post # 3  :)
My course is allot cheaper than the others, but it only goes over SONAR. The other courses listed below go over audio engineering also. That's why its so much more.

I like Scott's book , but to get it in the UK is more of a hassle

http://www.find-book.co.uk/1598638211.htm

I use book fella's to get both of them.. far better than amazon uk for them.

also there is some videos stuart did from SWA... I bought them when they were on offer months ago.. errm they were in the music tech sonar book.. well parts of them

http://streamworksaudio.com/

you just missed out on an offer they ran.. someone ages ago posted they were doing all their vid's cheapo.. so I bought/ downloaded the ones for the things I use.

I took the Pro Tools certification course with Pro Media, just to add some legitimacy to my resume. It was a great course, with an excellent instructor (Mihai at Stankonia in Atlanta). It was however a little on the pricey side. I think it was ~$3000 for the two weeks. I lived right down the street so that didnt include motel or food costs that some had to pay)

While I would recommend a classroom environment just for the forced learning experience and interaction, I can honestly say your best bet would be to purchase Sonar Power, and just go through it chapter by chapter with Sonar open, and explore everything. This is essentially what I did with Sonar Power 4. There was really no new material for me to learn when it came to being introduced to Pro Tools 7 (granted they operate slightly different but they do the exact same thing), and the class pretty much consisted of the same thing - going through the reading material chapter by chapter.
