Hi everyone,

Why has Cakewalk never released a new v3 version of Porject 5? They could have made so much money and a such great interface!

This software is a killer, I own both sonar 7 producer edition( which I find horrible to work with) and Project 5, I can create a very good tune extremely fast with Project5! While with Sonar......it takes ages, you spend more time playing with the gadgets than the actual creation.

Please Cakewalk team, explain why? Thank you.

In the mean time, I am working on a documentary project, I would like to sync the video while playing, I cannot find a single video VST out there, no idea why.

How can I use Project 5 as the host and sonar 7 producer edition as the slave via rewire? I can do the opposite without a problem but I don't want that.

P5 V1 was a soft synth tool squencer for the most part.  V2 added recording mutlitple tracks.  I imagine it was too costly to keep improving and as another DAW mostly cut into Cake's own product line.  If you buy the next generation SOnar's you'll see a lot of ideas implemented (step sequencer, etc.), but P5 remains the easiest soft synth/looping host around.

As far as rewiring, the easiest thing to do is start your program out in P5 (esp. for softsynths) rewired into SONAR.  Then bounce them to audio and drag the clips to SONAR.  SONAR has a better mix engine and general mixing environment to my mind.  Best of both worlds, tho there is that extra step of bouncing involved.

I am very surprised no one on the net made a simple and easy video VST plugin.
About Sonar VS Project 5, I am not sure about the mixing, if you get nice plugins like ozone and other top compressors/effects, I think you can get a pretty nice mix in a very short amount of time.

I really hate the Sonar interface, I played with it tonight(producer 7 edition) one more time, and I have to say, it will never come out of the box again, too many buttons, I do not like the step sequencer, you load 1 single dxi and 3 left windows shows up making the full thing really complicated when at the end of the day, our job is just about making music :-)

With Project 5 I keep adding DXI, VST and effects, it is just becoming better and better each time. If you add all the Native instrument kore players, wow you get a fantastic interface. The only down point is the wave manipulation which is not in Project 5, that's sad.

If they were making a V3.0 ,I would buy it straight away, I have never liked a sequencer as much as this one.

I'm with you, but unfortunately Cake dropped P5.  A few years ago there were many threads about it.  It was written by one employee who then left.  A shame, because for many using a lot of soft-synths/loops it was great.

As far as mixing, P5 is fine.  But SONAR does have the 64 bit engine, which is nice.  The new X1 interface is a lot cleaner, tho it is still more complex than P5.  But P5 never took off like Cake hoped, I guess, most users do more recording rather than in the box production and it distracted customers from the flagship SONAR.  At the time I thought it didn't make much sense commerically, but many of us P5 users continually hoped there would be a VST or P5 plugin as the wait for V3 extended for years.

As I said, Cake tacked on some P5 featurettes into SONAR, tho even something as simple as replacing a synth is still a pita.

Yes this is actually a good point, the 64 bit engine is excellent and you can add multiple tracks together with no slow down. In order to compensate with Project 5, I keep freezing(the freezing option) the tracks when I have more than 20, I have a quad core 3.2 Ghz with 8 Gigs of ram with XP PRO 64Bit and never get any crash which is great.

The other good point you are making is that Sonar is excellent for people who have to record external instruments with of course the right hardwares attached to it, project 5 will not work well for this type of set up, not enough options, but if you are crazy about virtual synths and samples, I think Cakewalk is good enough.
I will send you a few tunes I have made with Project 5 via PM.

I'm still using P5 after six + years and i will always use it.

I'm an unashamed P5 fanboy btw.

fangirl here . . . P5 changed my life !  Became music diva (in my mind) with P5 like no other DAW could have so quickly.

With the matrix P5 appeared to be competing with Ableton Live. Unfortuneately this was a difficult competitor to beat. Perhaps one of the reasons cake dropped P5.

I'm with you p5 is easy to create tracks on like nothing I have ever used, and further more because it lacks some things it lets you focus on the music instead on focusing on getting parts that you not going to keep perfect, but that's just me.

My personal view on this is that once the original creator of P5 left Cakewalk, no one knew what to do with it after that - there was no real vision for it. So it consequently became something that only got token attention and programming time between Sonar (and it's variants) updates; it was left to fester for too long and it would have required a huge amount of time and effort to really bring it up to date feature-wise - the decision to kill it and absorb some of it's features into Sonar was the easier choice. Not sure the absorption has been a total success though...

Cake should resurrect P5 to V3 now that they may have increased their market share with x1.........Now that's a thought.
