My band mate sent me a midi file to my email, I opened it with MC6 and I can see each track..I can see the meters when I play the file but I have no audio at all. I have audio with every thing else that involves my computer. I'm not sure what info I need to include with this post so I hope it's a simple fix.  Thanks

Hello,

MIDI itself doesn't have a sound but rather is a set of instructions to trigger an instrument to perform sounds. A lot of media player applications automatically trigger general MIDI synthesizers by default. Music Creator 6, on the other hand, has more advanced routing so that you can trigger the instrument of your choice. With more power, of course, comes a bit of a learning curve.

Ultimately, to hear your MIDI file you'll need to route the MIDI tracks in your project to an external hardware instrument or a software synthesizer included with the application. A few good sources to get started with this:

Tutorial 4 of the Music Creator 6 Touch documentation: http://www.cakewalk.com/Documentation/default.aspx?Doc=Music%20Creator%206%20Touch&Lang=EN&Req=Tutorial4.1.html

This video regarding working with software instruments in Music Creator 6: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=kMcs147Qj8w

(please note the above video showcases "Music Creator 6". If you are using "Music Creator 6 Touch" there might be some subtle differences, but the end concept is the same.

I hope this helps!

The midi file that was sent to my email from my bandmate was purchased from an online company and has all tracks completed so she's basically buying a completed song. She said she buys them and just opens them up with cakewalk and the songs play with no adjustments or anything. Would I still need to assign instruments to each track, when I did drums every track played a beat and it sounded like fireworks instead of music.   Thanks again

That would depend on the version of Cakewalk that she has. Some of the older versions used the synth in the sound card (General Midi/ Wave Table synth) to play midi tracks and they worked from the beginning..... MC6 needs a soft synth for each track

As Guitarhacker has said, it's unique to your friend's system.

The difference is that she probably has the Microsoft GS Wavetable synth present on her system. You can find out if it's present on yours by going to Edit > Preferences - MIDI Devices. If you see "Microsoft GS Wavetable" synth, try selecting it. This will default to sending MIDI data out to that device. It's important to understand why that works though.  It's still an instrument receiving MIDI data from the Cakewalk program. Without it, there would be no performance.

Whether or not the Microsoft GS Wavetable synth is present all depends on your internal sound card. On my laptop it only comes up if I'm using my internal sound card and have my Driver Mode (in Edit > Preferences - Audio  set to "MME (32-bit)". If I use an external audio device with ASIO drivers, it will not be an option for me. This is pretty normal.

I still stand behind checking out those tutorials though. Using the GS Wavetable synth isn't going to offer you much control (unless you do it the old fashioned way which requires a pretty big understanding of the MIDI specification). Using the Cakewalk TTS-1 as a general MIDI synth will give you MUCH more control. Using something even cooler than the Cakewalk TTS-1 is going to give you more control, and cooler sounds.

As Ryan points out.... TTS is a good synth and has relatively good sounds..... better than the wave table for sure.

Cakewalk Sound center has better sounds than TTS.... and there are synths with even better sounds but the cost starts to slide upward the better the sounds are.

By using the word "better" I simply mean that the sounds are more realistic. Instead of synthesized sounds, you are working with sampled sounds...and then sounds that are sampled in better conditions with better mics and better instruments to get a more realistic sounding instrument. So real, that even the players of those instruments can't tell if it's real or sampled in the playback.

Once you start using one synth per midi track, the sounds will be awesome, but you will very likely need more than a factory sound card to keep it all running in sync.

Thanks guys! I can hear everything now.   Next problem= I edited a midi song and it's good now I would like to export it to my desktop so I can put it on my mp3 player. Export is not an option when I click on "File" only track template? Will I be able to convert this midi (CVX) to mp3?   Thanks again guys!

You are looking for the Export function in the File menu. All Cakewalk DAW products come with a 30 day trial version of their mp3 encoder. If you choose not to purchase it, export your projects as wave files and encode the wave file with another tool. Another option is to configure MC6 to use an external mp3 encoder via the External Encode Configuration Utility in the Utilities menu.

Are you using the MS Wavetable Synth, or TTS-1?
If you are using the Wavetable Synth, as I believe you are, Export will not be available.
For Export to work, the sound must come from within the MC6 framework.
As Ryan alluded to, the Wavetable Synth is a (virtual) device external to MC. It will produce sound from MIDI sent to it, but it does not operate from within MC.
This is a huge problem with an easy fix. Don't use it.
Deselect it as an option from your Preferences menu.
Now, insert TTS-1 in your project.
Assuming TTS-1 is the only synth available to your MIDI track(s), the outputs will automatically switch to TTS-1.
After doing this, the sound will be coming from inside of MC, and you can export it.
And do those tutorials. They will help you get a handle on how this all works.

I am now using the TTS-1 and I am down to only one last issue, I exported a song as mp3 to my desktop and when I play it there is no audio. Is there another setting that needs changed?
Thank you very much, I need these files for a job this week so I appreciate all of the answers.
