There's an article up on CBC about the massive surge in "CryptoJacking" that's been going on.
Without blathering it's essentially a less nasty way for the hackers to make money.
http://www.cbc.ca/news/technology/cryptojacking-mining-1.4572360 They are essentially just stealing CPU cycles (kind of like SETI but of course the user is unaware of the processing bleed) to do intense equations using YOUR system then collecting a paycheque from whomever is requesting the processing power.
Unfortunately it does not explain WHO is/would want to do SETI style data processing and pay enough for it to make the hackers flock to it.
Weird.
