  • Using the Roland Integra-7 with Sonar Platinum

I cannot figure out how to assign Integra-7 instruments to a particular track within SONAR (I use Platinum, but the same issue arises in all recent versions of SONAR). All the Instrument Definition provided by Roland lets you do is assign a "Set" to a track, but there doesn't seem to be a way to assign individual instruments for that track. Nor, for that matter, can I switch between banks  within SONAR, except that there is a list of "sets" available.

My goal is to update Cakewalk songs that include tracks assigned to a Proteus and re-assign them to Integra-7.

In a pitch, I would be happy to configure Integra-7 as a GM2 module, but eventually I would like to use the Supernatural sounds.

I probably could use the Roland Integra-7 VST editor to set up a new track with the correct instrument, but that would not meet my requirements of re-assigning old Proteus tracks to Integra-7.

I should mention that I have been using Cakewalk since version 1.0 for DOS, which I bought from Greg Hendershot.

I am not sure I can help.  The full extent I use the integra is that it has sixteen midi channels I can choose from.  So you can save a set in the Integra with the instrument you want on ch 1, ch 2, etc.

Then for the track on Sonar - have its output match the output the Integra is on (Mine is for instance on the 5th midi out of my device) and then I select the channel on that output that is for the instrument I am trying to trigger.

There are ways to automate this more within Sonar.  I just am not into it that deep.  Did this help at all?

I use the Integra-7 Sound Editor. This is standalone.
This programs sends the configuration for all 16 midi channels to the integra-7.
In this Editor you can save the full set. It's a solution outside Sonar.

But the solution is not really good.

I don't have an integra, but speaking generally you should be able to build a basic config in the Integra with 16 timbres on 16 different midi channels and send program changes and bank select messages from Sonar, using the module's midi spec.
I gather this is already what you're doing? Any chance you missed a step? I think Roland multis are called "performance"? Are you starting with an blank performance?

I am sure that I could set up the Integra-7 to give me a basic 16 channel setup, where I could change Midi channels to change sounds, but that would be about the crudest approach.

What I really need is the ability within SONAR to access different banks and different instruments, you know, just like any other synth module.

Given that Roland owned SONAR when this module was developed, and distributed SONAR LE with the module, why in the world doesn't this module have basic SONAR compatibility?

Eh, I'm not saying you'd change midi channels, I'm saying you'd send program changes on midi channels to select sounds. I don't know what mode you are using right now but you need to at least select a multitimbral mode and have the module accept input from multiple channels and direct it to distinct timbres.

I will try sending program changes to the Integra to see if that works, thanks for the idea!

Update:  no joy, the patch change was transmitted to the Integra in a track set to Midi Channel 1, but the Integra did not react, even though it was set to Part 1.

That's strange. My old XP30 used to have a setting to enable or disable bank select/PC. Are you sure the Integra is set to respond to them? I suppose it's receiving midi notes at least, so you know the connection is working?

EDIT:
For example, googling "Integra Program Change" gave me this from the Sweetwater site:

How do I set up my Roland Integra-7 to receive Bank Select and Program Change messages?

Article #1721686

In order to set your Integra-7 to receive Bank Select and Program Change messages, you’ll need to adjust the System Settings. Follow the instructions below to do so, or refer to page 48 in the Integra-7 user manual.

In the Menu screen, choose System and press the Enter button.
Select the MIDI tab.
Scroll down to Rx Program Change. Set it to ON to receive Program Change messages.
Scroll down to Rx Bank Select. Set it to ON to receive Bank Select messages.
If you want these settings to be retained after shutting down the unit, you must save the settings. From the System screen, hold the Shift button and press the Edit button. A message will pop up saying “Completed!” and the settings will be saved.

I checked, and the Integra-7 defaults to receive Program Change and RX Bank select messages - these settings are ON.

The issue is that the module does not respond to Patch Change commands in SONAR; I suspect it is because the Integra architecture does not present "patches" to SONAR, but "sets" which contain multiple programs.

Anyway, as I am working on my SONAR songs, the Integra-7 is something of a boat anchor, since I can't use it in any songs as it is.

I made a little progress.

SONAR has a series of means of specifying the patch used with the Integra-7.

First, the INTEGRA-7 driver must be loaded, along with an instrument definition file. In my system, the Integra-7 is 2nd on the list of instruments, so when I use it on a track, the output is defined as the Integra-7, the 2nd instrument in my list. Fine so far.

Secondly, the specific Midi channel for the track must be defined, in this case, channel 1.  So, the menu shows "1: Roland INTEGRA-7 Studio Set.  Fine so far.

Thirdly, the bank must be set, in my case, BANK = 10880-INTEGRA 7 Studio Set (which duplicates the information in the channel section.

Fourth comes the patch information, in my latest attempt is "6:Rock Band Set". Since I have loaded the Rock Band Set into my Integra-7, I should be getting Part #1 when I create a Midi track assigned to Midi Channel 1.

Part 1 of the Rock Band Set happens to be a nice organ sound, but that is not what I get. What I get is nothing, because the Integra-7 changes sets as soon as I start a Midi song, and it defaults to Nothing.  I get an empty set with nothing in Part 1, so no sound.

What fixes that is a Patch Change command to "6", which reloads the Rock Band Set after a Midi song starts. In that way, I can hear the organ from Part 1 in my Midi song. Trying other channels results in nothing, and I have not solved that problem.

This Integra-7 may be usable with SONAR after I figure it out, but so far, it is a one trick pony.

I have yet to see a post from anyone who ever got this to work with SONAR Platinum.
