Hi David,

I'm following your thread closely, but can't (yet) contribute much ... but I wanted to say you're not alone out there ;-)

I only recently got myself an INTEGRA, mainly to have a sound workhorse that I could take along for live performances (as I wouldn't want to use VSTs live) ... I had initially not considered it due to its lack of integration with PC DAWs, but liked the sounds ... now there are new projects and more live shows ... and Roland meanwhile released the VST plugin ... so I jumped onboard ... and, boy, I like the sounds, but I hate the slow, bloated VST GUI !!

due to loads of work and little time to test the new gear, I have only created myself a 16 track template for Sonar and have it sitting (temporarily) right next to the mix desk so I can edit directly on the INTEGRA ... not a good solution but faster than the VST GUI ... anyway, I basically need to do exactly waht you are doing ...

Please, keep documenting your struggle here ... I hope I can catch up next week and try a few things myself ...

All the best

Rob

I am slowly learned how to adapt to the idiosyncrasies of the Integra-7.   I discovered that my unit defaults to "USER 1" as the default "set" after it is turned on, although I have set the system to load the Rock band Set 6 as the default; I just tried hitting {Shift} {Edit} and the unit responded that I successfully wrote something, so maybe it is in permanent memory now. I will find out later.

My next step is to try to get an instrument to function on Midi Channel 2; I have the organ working on Channel 1, if I execute a patch change for every midi song at the beginning that sets the "set" to 6. I also have to manually set the volume by an controller event for every song, since the controls in the SONAR console seem to have little or not effect on the INTEGRA-7.

I am assuming if I assign a SONAR track to the Integra-7 and Midi channel 2 that the unit would play whatever sound was preloaded into Part #2, but no ................  if I do that, the Integra-7 goes blank, loading USER 1 set, which is not defined yet. Apparently, it doesn't like any Midi channel but #1, maybe because I told it that the Global Midi channel is #1, and that is all it will respond to.

The mystery deepens. Well, at least I have one channel working.

First, have you set (on the Integra) Menu, System, USB Driver = VENDER ?

Is a "set" a complete set of up to sixteen instruments? If so, that is not what you should be using as your patch list. It would be pointless. What you need is a list of programs or voices or whatever Roland calls it (Korg calls it programs and combinations, I'm used to that).

That's what I meant before, what you need is an empty set (User 1, presumably) and select individual sounds per channel from Sonar.

YES

The Integra-7 does respond to Patch changes, except that it changes "sets", not "patches" or "programs" as do other synths.

In the Menu screen, choose System and press the Enter button.
  • Select the MIDI tab.
  • Scroll down to Rx Program Change. Set it to ON to receive Program Change messages.
  • Scroll down to Rx Bank Select. Set it to ON to receive Bank Select messages.

If you want these settings to be retained after shutting down the unit, you must save the settings. From the System screen, hold the Shift button and press the Edit button. A message will pop up saying “Completed!” and the settings will be saved.

Yeah, I have done all of this. No joy, except that I can change sets via Sonar patch changes.

So there is no way to store particular sounds to a User bank and then have Sonar change patches in the User bank?
Anyway, for me, having 16 available at any one time is fine, but the OP has different requirements.

Don't do what I did though:  I sold my Integra - then I just repurchased one, because it was missed too much!

I think you need to get a different instrument definition file or check the Integra's midi implementation guide. As weirdly handicapped as some Roland instruments are, I can't believe a studio sound module wouldn't support selection of individual patches/programs. Perhaps different bank numbers are detailed in the midi spec to get to the patches/programs?

EDIT:
Yeah it looks like the guide specifies different bank MSB/LSB for individual programs. Example;
MSB 085 | LSB 000 | PC 001 - 064 | Studio Set | 01 - 64

MSB 089 | LSB 000 - 001 | PC 001 - 128 | User SN Acoustic Tone | 0001 - 0256

Check the guide for more. No idea if there is a premade instrument definition file available, but with this you should at least be able to get there "manually" and store whichever programs you were using within your project.

Here is the INS for the Integra-7:

http://roland.com/support/article/?q=downloads&p=INTEGRA-7&id=62481992

Actually, there are several:

  • INTEGRA-7_DrumKit+GM2.ins   for INTEGRA-7 Drum Kit
  • INTEGRA-7_StudioSet.ins   for INTEGRA-7 Studio Set
  • INTEGRA-7_Tone+GM2.ins   for INTEGRA-7 Tone List

In the Integra-7 Downloads area, there is a manual called:

INTEGRA-7_Parameter_Guide_e01_W.pdf

Buried in this document is the following language:

"CONTROL Tab:

Specify the MIDI messages that will be used for Tone Control of the studio set.

MEMO

If you want to use the Tone Control 1–4 Src settings of each studio set to control the tone,
set the system setting “Control Source Select” to STUDIO SET. If you want to use the system
settings System Control 1–4 Src to control the tone, set the system setting “Control Source
Select” to “SYSTEM.”

I have no idea what this means, but it sounds important.
