I found a link to these videos from Sonic Sense Pro Audio. Really nicely done series on compression. 20-25 minutes total. Time well spent for noobs like me.

I especially like the way they did the green=dry to red=compressed comparisons. So much easier to hear than flipping bypass on and off...

(Actually, different colors for different comparisons)

Part IV is coming, I learned the most with Part III multiband compression for bass :)
