Hi,

I'm currently using the Intel graphics adapter (HD4000) that's built in ti the i7 3770k chip - andit's fine.

If (when) I upgrade my motherboard, if I have to get a PCIe graphics card - is there a consensus whether it's better to get a nvidia or AMD graphics adapter? Or does it just depend on the individual adapter whetehr it will be trouble free (re: low latency etc)?

This will be with Windows 10 x64 if that counts for anything.

Thanks for any ideas...

If you're just doing straight up audio production, onboard Intel HD video is fine.
If you need more specific features, let those determine the video card.
ie: If you want hardware acceleration for video editing, I'd go with a Nvidia GTX card.

Hi Jim,

I just meant, what's recommended if the Intel chips don't have onboard video anymore? (I'm not sure if they do or not - I haven't done any research yet...)

Your chip will run 3 monitors at 2560x1440 @ 60 Hz
No need for a graphics card

Thanks Terra,

I was thinking about what to do with an update. If the new Intel chips still have graphics adapters in them (I haven't checked) I'll be all set. If not, I'll have to get one.

Most MoB's have on board graphics chips these days and many can support up to three monitors 1 analogue the others digital.  As noted above it really depends on what else you might do with the computer.  I would avoid the gaming ones as they tend to have fans which will result in noise.

I just picked up a silent nvidia 1 gig card for $49 CDN. IT's for a media PC I cobbled together on a budget. I've used cards from both manufacturers over the years. I liked the nvidia for gaming but find the AMD cards to run very cool and quiet. My HD 7950 is a power house but makes virtually no noise from the 2 fans it has. You have a bunch of options.

Socket 2011-3 CPUs don't have onboard graphics.
If you need a simple/quiet video card, HD5450 can be found passive-cooled and they're inexpensive.

Socket 1150 (HD-4600) and 1151 (HD-530) CPUs have onboard GPUs.
To clarify: The video ports are on the motherboard, but the GPU is on the CPU.

I prefer Nvidia simply because of all the incredible, unnecessary and absolute pains I have had trying to update AMD drivers over the years.

Having recently bought an AMD because of the DX12 issue after using Intel for years, you're absolutely correct. I actually very much regret buying this videocard.
