  • Issue with blackscreening in Windows 10

So not my studio computer that is doing this but I've been banging my head off the desk trying to figure out what is going on.

It seems to happen randomly. I'll be browsing websites or one of the other major triggers I've noticed is watching videos and suddenly the screen goes black. 2 seconds later the computer stops responding to everything else so the sound is gone as well. I reboot the computer; everything is fine.

I've gone through the Event Viewer and there has been nothing there that is pointing to why this has been happening. All the temps on the hardware are also fine.

I'm seriously at a loss as to why this is happening or how else I can troubleshoot it apart from starting to take it apart piece by piece till it happens again. Sometimes it happens multiple times a day, other times not at all. I'd say I average about once a day.

Any ideas?

First thought, Video.

Are you using a separate video card or the Intel video (in the CPU)?

Using an MSI R9 390 card.
That was my first thought as well but I have no problem playing games or anything of the sort. In fact, I've been playing an extremely unoptimized game lately that pushes the whole system to the limit due to it being in development still and have never blackscreened once while playing. It's the oddest thing.

Plus, many times when it does this, I'm not looking at video, just browsing websites. :\

I assume the motherboard has video connections.  For testing, remove the video card and just use the Intel graphics and see what happens.

I'm using the built in Intel CPU graphics on several PC's and Sonar works OK on all of them.  I don't do any gaming so I can't say how it will work with games.

It won't work well with games but I'll give it a go when I know I'll be taking some time off them.

  • Reseat the video card
  • Make sure Win10 is up-to-date
  • Install the latest Catalyst Control Center
If video still blacks out... I'd replace the video card.

Tried the latter two already.

I'll reseat it tonight as well. I know it does have a fan whine and coil whine that I've already talked to MSI about but I've ran multiple benchmarks and stress tests on it as well as gone through every single speed on the fan to try and pinpoint where the issue starts but came up with nothing. They tell me it's a 3 week wait for the card to get back so I've been holding off. I'll probably know more once I pull the card out and try onboard video as well but I'm almost certain the videocard is the issue.

Thanks, guys.

Although intermittent failures usually point to hardware problems, the video adapter itself wouldn't be my first assumption because the failure occurs only in a specific software scenario. The video driver, OTOH, could well be the culprit. It's possible the browser, or a plugin, is trying to put the adapter into a mode it can't handle, or invoke an acceleration feature that's broken.

First thing I'd try is switch to a different browser for a while and see if the problem persists.
