  • [Solved] Removing or reassigning an orphaned automation envelope

I had a simple automation envelope on a track to bypass a VST effect in a particular section of the song. Decided to try another VST, so deleted the old one in the FX rack, thinking I'd just reassign this simple on/off envelope to the new VST.

Nope. I can't see a way to do that, nor can I delete the existing envelope, since it doesn't appear in the automation drop down menu in the track. I can still see it in the background of the Clips view.

Suppose I could re-insert the old VST, but seems kind of clunky. Any suggestions?

- select the track
- go to Delete special
- Untick all the obvious ones but leave Automation ticked.
- Click OK.

This will leave your tracks data intact but remove any automation on that track.
FYI- this deletes all automation on that particular track. so if you have other automation on that track it will be deleted.

you can also open up the Automation lane and delete that as well.

Thanks Chuck,

I also have a volume envelope on that track that I'd prefer not to have to recreate.

I'm sure in an earlier version (maybe X3?) I was able to re-assign envelopes. Is that not possible anymore?

Try reassigning the envelope from the plugin you wish to replace before you delete it.
You can right-click any envelope and reassign it [Right-click envelope>'Assign Envelope'] to any parameter relating to that track.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Daryl,

Sure, as mentioned in my original post, I can re-insert the old plugin, and the envelope should 'attach' to it.

But say i came back to this project after a few weeks and couldn't remember which plugin I had used for the envelope. It seems wrong that I can't either directly remove the orphaned envelope, or at least see somehow which plugin it belongs to.

And I'm sure this was possible in an earlier version.

Try SHIFT+click on the envelope. That should select it. Then right-click on the envelope for the context menu.

Thanks scook,

That works. Didn't know there was a way to select envelopes in the clips view. Also, if you hold down SHIFT and move the pointer over the envelope, you can see its name, in this case "Orphaned". Handy.
