The new PRV, although for the most part a nice improvement, does impose a few new hurdles.
What I used to do was CTL-click the Track View to select the MIDI tracks I wanted to edit and then press ALT-3. All the tracks came up in an editable state in the PRV, but they could present a confusing rat's nest if there were many of them in overlapping octaves or overlapping notes. It was too easy to accidentally select a note in the wrong track, so to avoid that I'd often lock some tracks. The new auto-lock feature
should neatly solve that problem.
However, it also presents new hurdles. First of all, the gray colors of the locked tracks make them impossible to distinguish from one another, and difficult to use as markers for lining up other tracks' notes. Second, I can no longer move to a different track by clicking on a note in that track. I now am required to select the track from the new Picker window. IMO the locked tracks need not be completely inert. They should respond to mouse clicks even if their events are locked in place.
So I've mostly abandoned the promising auto-lock feature for now. With it turned off, I can again see each track in its original color and I can move from one to the next by clicking on a note. I can also identify which track a note belongs to by clicking on it and listening to the note preview. However, that newly-selected track is not highlighted in the Picker as it should be. So if, for example, I have first-violins and second-violins in the PRV, I can click a note and tell it's a violin but not
which violin track.
We have also apparently lost the ability to lock individual tracks. Say I want to show four tracks but lock just one of them to prevent accidental editing. Maybe I'm blind, but I see no way to do that. It seems to be "lock everything but the current track" or "lock nothing".
These complaints have nothing to do with rogeriodec's bug report above. He's right, it is a bug. The display should be updated as soon as the track state changes. And he's also right about not being able to de-select the currently-selected track.
I'm sure these will be corrected in the next update. I just hope some of the less-obvious usability issues are also looked at. Maybe CW should look into recruiting some heavy-duty MIDI composers into the beta team.
