Finally gonna scrap my octacapture, fed up with the crashes and lack of Roland support. Any suggestions on a cakewalk compatable interface with 4 to 8 inputs with decent pre's? I don't mind spending a dollar for value. Running Windows 10, SPlat, with need for midi and HiZ inputs. Any suggestions are appreciated.

The cure to Sonar crashing is either RME or MOTU - both are rock solid, you just need to pick the interface with the I/O options you need. all of MOTUs later units share the same driver, and RME is known for outstanding driver support even for their older devices.

(BTW, just a few days ago I fired up to my previous Roland interface to get access to the hardware synth inside ... I was quickly back in crash land where I haven't been since going with MOTU)

From personal experience the RME UFX firewire and USB2/3 drivers are solid with any application I've used in Windows or MacOS and the pres are good, transparent and very low noise as are the line inputs. If you need fewer inputs other RME interfaces have a similar reputation. RME's Totalmix software is enormously powerful, allowing all kinds of routings, multiple monitor mixings and does pretty much anything a modern digital mixer can do.

And if you ever need a small, fully functional live sound mixer an RME interface with an ADAT unit or two added if necessary in a 2 or 3 unit rack and controlled by Totalmix on a tablet/laptop makes a very compact and capable setup.

I also went from crash-a-minute Roland interface to an RME, and it was totally worth it. RME are as good as their reputation, and buying one transformed my DAW experience. I could not be happier with my Babyface.

Went with RME Babyface Pro, which seemed pricey before I bought it, but has paid for itself many times over in recovered productivity.  A very solid and musician friendly interface...

If you have the budget, you won't regret anything RME.
It's the type of audio interface that'll work for 10 years... and you'll never give it a second thought.

MOTU audio interfaces are also very good.

Both offer low round-trip latency, solid drivers, and good sound.
