@mettelus and Anderton: Thanks for the replies about the separation tool. I think I was assuming that creating more separations would automatically translate into more audible discontinuities, even where you don't want them. I'll have to do more experimenting.
 
BTW, Craig, I've been working my way through your SONAR tip book. Thanks for putting them all together in one place.
