The only "audio interface" that does not work well is usually onboard sound.

Usually, yes. But the serious problem I’ve been experiencing goes away if I use the board soundcard. The issue is briefly explained in this post in the other thread of mine.

If replacing an audio interface, be sure to get one from a store which has a 30-day return policy so that you get the opportunity to test drive it on your system.

I don’t know how many music stores here have such a generous policy, but I’ll definitely look for one. Thanks for the advice.

Tricky way is to look in device manager and see what device is on what port/hub. You may have to unplug various devices to do this. Also, when connected to a usb 3.0 port it will be on the xHCI controller as opposed to the eHCI controller for 2.0 devices. It would help if you have a block diagram of your motherboard to see how things are connected.

I cheated....went and got an Inantech pcie to usb card strictly for my usb audio stuff. All the usb number crunching is done on the card and passed along the pci buss to the chipset. On some computers and laptops the usb hub is part of the main chipset. This can cause some bandwith issues.

Thanks for the tip...

I had trouble with both the Lynx Two B and Lynx Two C. Starting with the release of Sonar 7, I started to get heavy motor-boating to the point where Sonar became useless. Sonar 8 through Platinum, the problem was mostly fixed, but would occasionally rear it's head on heavy projects. I'd have to do a full shut down/reboot to solve it. The card ran flawlessly with all other hosts, and I've never had motor-boating with any other program. I'd avoid anything from Line 6. I had some of their small interfaces that came bundled with software, which the program uses as a dongle, and they were always a headache.
