When was the last time you heard BB King teach a class on music theory ?
What about Carlos Santana ? Jeff Beck ? Eric Clapton ? Jimmy Page ? Chet Atkins ? or Wes Montgomery ?

Each and every player I just mentioned including dozens more players that have stood the test of time were on the scene back then when Jimi broke and made it big 50 years ago ...

Think about it for a moment . What does that tell you ?

All of those players spent time  working on the language of playing music not the theory of playing .
They each chose to create their own music vocabulary  ...
Each player mentioned has very different phrasing , timing & tone . Some are storytellers . Some follow the rules for a while just to break the rules ...

Yeah , They all play The Geetar , VIVA ! the fret board Revolution They all sound fantastic .
Each and every one of them players can lay claim to  having their own highly unique way of playing and sound  ,

Then Jimi comes along and does a Musical Columbus & shows the whole World that Music and The Whole Musical Universe is not flat ...

Some of us were there for that back then ..Some of us may still even be talking about  it 50 years later ...

This new stuff sounds pretty good in a lot of areas ...It is nice to hear how he took some of this playing and honed it in tighter for the music he released back then when he was alive ...

His playing and ideas were sure very solid

Peace Out for now

Kenny

Can't find more than this detailing who played on the individual tracks:
"Though its track list includes a tune with original Jimi Hendrix Experience members Mitch Mitchell and Noel Redding, the bulk of the set features the lineup that became Band of Gypsies – bassist Billy Cox and drummer Buddy Miles." Other than the guest list of course.
My guess is that Mitch is drumming on Hear my Train A Comin' and Sweet Angel (my personal favorite).
For me it just isn't Hendrix without Mitch; something about the way he uses the kick seems to
free Jimi up to really soar.
As to Noel, I couldn't care less.
Woodstock is a rare gem; very much a treat to hear Stills working up its eventual arrangement.
Can't ever get enough of Johnny Winter, so Things I Used To Do has to go on my "I loved it" list.
Is this an A+ production, nay; but its all we have and I'll pick it up.
The Radio One sessions remain my favorite posthumous work; but of course Jimi had "completed"
those...

T
PS: as to "music theory"?
Its how lesser musicians explain what Jeff Beck, Hendrix. et al are doing (or have done).
Yes, we all need to understand I IIm IV V etc. and it is "convenient" to label the various scales;
especially for the purposes teaching.
But do I ever think "I'll go all Mixolydian or Lydian this one"; really?

Right Deer, Kenny,

Technologists after the fact trying to put an analysis quantitative on something that just flowed with the artist who didn't give a fork about intonation and scales. They just played and magic happened.

On the downside, with all the brilliance of these songs, it was an omen of Jimi's downward spiral with drugs and alcohol. You can damn me for blasphemy, but just how I see it.

Neptune came out even though it was not supposed to be posthume. Jimi played with his incredible style, but something was going south. Studio polished but relying on old riffs, remakes. The content of the songs not as original and creative as his earlier stuff.
Same with Both Sides. Either redefining himself as a three chord blues player or something was slipping.

As a guitarist, Jimi is and always has been my idol. Not slamming him like an ignorant slob, just looking at the progression of his legacy. So fortunate to have these new cuts. Made my day. Thanks Kenny.

USA PBS audiences only ?    sorry about that ...

After listening to these tunes a few times over the past few days,  I still have this one thought that I keep wondering about ...
What Jimi would think if he was able to travel to the future and play his guitar out of what most of us here have now as far as plugs and amp sims go ...even what just came w SONAR

I can't seem to shake that thought ..

Think I was a bit hard on Jimi. There is some brilliant guitar work in many of the songs, though I sense the effect of wear and tear on his inspiration and originality. Still though, trying to imagine hearing the songs back in that time.

Have also had a thought I was wondering about the last couple days, sorta in the same line as Kenny.

If Hendrix were transported here today, would he be able to make anywhere near the same impact as then. Or would he be drowned out in the sheer volume of noise and not have any impact at all.

John
