Hi, I am currently using Sonar 4 Producer and want to change the "temperament" by changing the fundamental frequency of the notes. Is it possible to do this? I seem only to be able to use equal temperament.

If it's not possible to change this, does anybody know if it can be changed in Sonar 5 or 6?

Thanks,

Laura

No, no and no.

You could only do that in MIDI using pitchbend and it would be a nightmare to try to get the exact frequencies. Get a synth or softsynth that has different temperament built-in. I had a Yamaha synth (FB-01? TX81Z?) years ago that had several different tunings.

Well believe it or not someone has made a VSTi plugin to do just that. Tobybear Productions MICROTUNER automatically adds pitchbend to your note to 'correct' them to a defined scale. You can download it here:

The bad news is that I don't think SP4 supports midi out from VSTi (can anyone confirm? I'm not an SP4 user). I seem to remember reading somwhere that this is on the list of new features on Sonar 6, but I can't find the reference so I can't be sure.

BTW Dave, I still have (and use) my Yamaha TX81Z, although I have to admit I have never tried any exotic tunings.

It sounds like you'd rather have an overall host application feature, but quite a few current soft-synths feature Scala implementation. Dimension Pro, Rapture, z3ta+, Rhino, VSampler, Eve, Tobybear's Helios, and Cameleon come to mind. You can take advantage of the 3000+ .scl files available in the archive [here].

More importantly, you can get as creative as you want by creating your own custom files. There's a full-featured open application on a variety of platforms that's very deep and extensible: Scala 2.2t here. For more information, go to Scala's home page [here].

Yes, I would rather have the overall host application feature, but this looks like I may be able to do what I have in mind. Thanks to all that replied!

I think Sonar supports midi out from VSTi as of the 5.2 update.

According to Cakewalk Tech Support, Dimension Pro does NOT support Scala 2.2. Rapture definitely does, works like a charm.

Hmm. That's funny ... it does here. 2.2 being the standalone file construction app; Scala meaning the .scl file itself. Dimension Pro 1.2 even received the fix that resets standard tuning with Shift+click. In Rapture, you still have to close & re-open the GUI as a workaround for the time being. They were possibly referring to the original version of Dimension that bundles with Project5 v.2.

I thought Sonar 5 already did this? Or am I just misreading the settings? Forgive me for my ignorance, I only just got on the Sonar 5 boat.

Yeah, I wondered if they knew what they were talking about. I was trying to decide on Rapture vs. Dimension Pro. I should have asked here...but I haven't had the issue you describe - maybe I'm using it differently? I've simply applied the .scl file to a particular Rapture track so I can hear it (through the speakers) from the MIDI keyboard.

Did you have anything else to add re: Dimension Pro?
