I need a complete step by step guide as I am a total noob and all of that is just gobledygook to me :(

Theres my reading for a whole day or two.

One thing not mentioned in the kb article is how to set up a bus to act as the default Master bus. This is mentioned here

Note:  You can also choose the default output bus for new audio tracks by right-clicking a bus, and choosing Set as Default Bus from the pop-up menu.

 
I believe the default template shipped with SONAR is set up this way.

To draw in automation: In the track view click the arrow for the buss pane at the bottom of the window. That should show all of your busses. Maximize the master buss window, choose automation in the edit filter dropdown menu. That should give you a dialog to choose what to automate, choose volume. With the smart too double click the automation line to add nodes where you want changes in volume to occur.
To record automation expand the master busses inspector, click the W ( write automation ) play your song and adjust the volume how you like it.
In either method make sure the 'R' (read automation) is enabled for the automation to work.

I figured it out. It was a tiny error that I had minimised the master track view. I just had to click on the arrow under the tracks to get it back.
