  • Is it possible to synch individual tracks from an analog multitrack to Sonar Platinum?

Hi,

I was able to connect RCA to XLR cables to my Roland Quad Capture from my Tascam MKIII 424 and mix down an analog 4 track demo that I had done several years ago.  The recording on the cassette still sounded good and had that warm sound.  I wanted to try to transfer each individual track into Sonar Platinum.  It wasn't synching properly and I am wondering if anyone has done this successfully?  I wanted to get each track onto its own track in Sonar.  What I want to accomplish is then use the other available tracks in Sonar to add some more guitar, additional backup vocals, keyboard, etc.  Has anyone else been able to achieve something like this?

Thanks!

If you can connect the four outputs of the Tascam to 4 inputs of the interface, and record each to it's own track simultaneously, there would be virtually no way the tracks would get out of sync. You might subsequently need to sync SONAR's timeline to those tracks if you intend to add MIDI parts, but that will need to be done after the fact.

I recently replaced all rubber wheels and bands in my Tascam 244!

Why not just connect all four tracks straight into the QuadCapture, RCA to Phono Jack? (adapters are available).

...but if that's not possible, just record each tape track one after the other to a separate Sonar track, then zoom in and find something in each audio track you can manually line up (if there's some bleed, the bass drum should be visible).

It's just 4 tracks, I wouldn't spend too much time insisting on the technically correct solution.

We digitaze tapes ... for customers.
The ONLY way is to record ALL tracks at the same time. This is not possible with the Quad-Capture with only 2 analog inputs. You need an interface like the octa capture. Otherwise it is out of synch or you get phasing effects.

Bummer... I did not realize 'Quad' Capture doesn't have 4 analog inputs.

One way around this would be to record one of the tracks along with each of the other three tracks in turn, and use that track's waveform as a reference to align all the recordings.

It's called Quad Capture and it only has 2 inputs?!?

...Oh. I have the OctaCapture and assumed ... well.

The timing isn't sample-accurate. It won't prevent phasing effects.

Just for reference, I had the Tascam 688. I transferred all my old studio tapes using, at that time, a Tascam 1800 interface.

I think you may just have to get an interface with enough inputs.

I do digital transfer work myself and all above is correct. the drift in the capstan motors are so trivial, you will never get them to synch up properly unless you transfer all 4 tracks on 1 pass.
One of the main reasons my interface has 18 inputs (using in conjunction with a Focusrite Octopre)

My advise is to borrow a 4 input unit, hire someone, or record 2 of the 4 tracks and build the song around those 2 tracks.
Weather that be Guitar and vocals. then create drums and bass in sonar or use Drums and vocals and over dub guitars and bass.
those are the 2 options I would go with.

Thank you all for your suggestions, this really helps a lot!!!  I will give it a try!

"Quad" Capture means 2 analog and 2 digital IN.
We have 4 Quad-Captures to digitaze tapes. And I know that there are only 2 analog inputs (or one stereo-input). Therefor its strange that our Octa-Captures have 8 analog inputs.
