• SONAR
  • aux track recording vs bounce/freeze audio quality

I like to create aux tracks and send software samplers/synths to the aux tracks
to record in real time, with or without effects.

I do this because it is more of a live feel, or like using a tape machine.

There are many advantages to having this available, but I wonder
if the audio quality is quite as good vs. bouncing a track.

does anyone know how to control settings for recording
aux tracks in real time, in terms of sample rate or bit depth,
and if a 'bounced' track has better sound somehow, from
dithering or a higher sample rate?  or any other considerations?

thank you.

The Aux track will have the bit depth and sample rate of the project. There is no differences in quality no matter how you create your tracks in Sonar except doing time stretching and things like that.

As john said, there is no degeneration/deterioration of sound quality.
It not like the old days were you had to be mindful of how many bounces (generations) you did on tape .
Those were good times. We really learned to squeeze every drop out of an 4 track/8 track multi track recorder.

It's all ones and zeroes   They don't care whether they're frozen or sent to an Aux track.

thank you both, i see the 32 bit does not seem to have aux tracks

i have old cakewalk delay/chorus/reverb plugins that only show
up in my 32 bit sonar.  I'll have to see if I can get the 64 bit
sonar to find them somehow.

thanks again, i'm off to record some stuff!

Maybe you have not updated your 32-bit Sonar?

I ran the central command center,
This issue is probably best for tech support rather than the forum., but I may try
other update methods.

thanks.

Check the About screen. It will tell you which 32bit version is running.

The old 32bit DX plug-ins were never ported to 64bit. They will not run in 64bit SONAR unless you are willing to go to the trouble of installing a DX-To-VST wrapper. Even the the results may not be worth the trouble.

Command center makes you choose 64 bit or 32 bit. You would need to run it twice to install both.

nice, thank you very much.  I'll update the 32, and I got the dxi to vst2 wrapper as well, so
this is great.

I am trying to migrate over to 64 bit, I would like to get all the way there, though it
has been no trouble opening the same project in 32 and 64 bit, except for occassionally
losing a plug in.

I just discovered how to do automation on clips for velocity very quickly and easily
without having to create a lane or anything, this was a very nice discovery today of
the drop down menu on midi tracks.  I was trying to figure out why I couldn't
move a clip, and found I had inadvertently selected automation-velocity from
the available drop down menu.  very, very nice.  I have everything colored
in light blue and almost white blue with the customizable color scheme
for the track background.  Anyway, I have been pleased today with the ease of use
now that I am getting the sizing better on my main view.

It would be nice to more easily and quickly change the size/zoom, but I can only
do so much at one time.

Thank you.
