I am looking for a good multi-band compressor that I can use on individual tracks.   What do you recommend?

Thanks

The new L-phase one is where I'd start.  Just be sure to set it to non-linear mode in the expert settings.

They are still a bit process intensive, but multiband on each track, that would be my starting place before looking elsewhere.  Great tools.

You can't beat the Sonitus Multiband for lightweight efficiency (when it was initially designed, a 200 MHz Pentium I was the state-of-the-art CPU). Its only serious limitation is its fixed number of bands; it's generally better to use as few bands as possible. Other than that, it's a superb plugin.

As you're thinking about this, you might also consider asking yourself if a dynamic equalizer might be more appropriate than a multi-band compressor.

Hi, Dave. I typically don't use multi-band compression on individual tracks, but I don't want to jump to conclusions. Is that what you're suggesting? Do you have any specific recommendations for dynamic EQs?

Melda Productions has a dynamic EQ I've used and liked.

You asked about multi-band on a single track...
Applying top end compression and lift on a vocal is a pretty common single track vocal treatment these days. You can even bypass the other bands when you do it if you like. I'm only just giving an example.

Part of the idea behind a dynamic EQ from my perspective is that it emphasizes what you are up to.

I think the dynamic EQs are interesting b/c they emphasize how the EQ and compression/expansion go together.  Sometimes you actually expand below a certain signal and compress above another level... this helps quiet the quiet times and quiet the loudest times while leaving the bulk of the track in place.

It can make a lot of sense to compress a track based on the frequencies that are overwhelming. It's a bit more surgical.

I'll be honest, I own the dynamic eq and I use it sparingly. I'm not hugely comfortable with it at this time.
