I used the Melda Multiband convolution verb on the mix.

If you haven't seen/heard it, check out the Miktek CV4.
Variable pattern tube mic (company based out of Nashville)

Amazingly versatile.
Sounds great on just about anything (VOs, Vocals, Ac Gtr, El Gtr cab, etc)
Not overly exaggerated on the tube vibe.
On guitar cab, it's particularly surprising... as it maintains that aggressive character you'd typically associate with a dynamic mic (albeit with more detail - which you'd expect from a condenser).

I wanted to pickup a world-class LDC... and was leaning toward a U87.

Consulted with my buddy Stuart at Sweetwater... and he suggested the CV4.
Read a bunch of positive reviews/comments... and decided to give it a whirl.
Even though it's a variable pattern tube mic, tonally it's in the same ballpark as the U87 (albeit with more versatility).

The CV4 isn't as dark sounding as a C12... but it reminds me of that mic in that it's not overly bright... but still captures a very detailed sound.

Jim, this is a vid showing a recent recording using a MXL Mogami Edition V69 tube mic and the crackle I get.

I'm sure lots of tube mics don't do this, but I thought I'd post it in case you have any thoughts.

For this reason, I'm a bit nervous about tube mics. This is my only tube mic.

This'll be fun (but I might need a moment to recover LOL)....
I had a pair of C414b/uls and every time I hear a track with them, I think, "man, I gotta find one or two!" Mine went away in the 2008 foreclosure debacle along with my other 36 studio mics. Highly recommended! I don't know about the current versions, but wouldn't hesitate on the C414b/uls version, at all.

Of my current list(8), I would highly recommend the CAD E100s (mine needs repair. It's superbly quiet), the Mojave MA200, the ADK Thor and I am really pleased with my MA101FET, AKG C480b/uls CK61, and Beyer M160 (not a figure 8 -you'd need an M130 for that). They all make me feel great on playback!

I did also own a U87 and think, now, I'd either go Pearlman, Peluso (any two will match according to them)or get a pair of the new Warm Audio WA87 ($600!)when they come out. Can't wait to hear/try them! And they're multipatterns!

Good luck!
Michael

I would definitely get fussy about that crackling sound.
It's certainly *not* expected result/behavior from a tube mic.

A bad pre-amp tube can cause similar noises.
You've probably heard this with a guitar amp that needed new pre-amp tube/s.
In the guitar amp, the noise would be louder (more obnoxious) due to it being amplified.
If you haven't already, I'd replace the 12at7 tube (~$20)

I've got a pair of C414-XLS mics.
Very versatile... and sound good on many sources
If you ever record drum kit, they're stellar as overheads.
