Any ideas if BandLab does this particular function better?

Yes - See Scook's reply re: Ripple Editing

If there's no data in the hole you can simply add a copied and pasted clip as a dummy clip for the area you're trying to delete. Or succumb to the forum peer pressure and try Cakewalk by Bandlab. 😄✌️ I actually mixed an album with Cakewalk recently and only had 1 crash when I was switching between 2 versions of the same project verifying automation data. Otherwise it's been more stable than Platinum for me. i rarely use the newer versions on client projects until they pass the tests of my own songs first. I needed sidechaining though and used Cakewalk and it did great! I do understand the hesitation of upgrading. You might want to Copy and paste your X2 project (or Save As) and then rename it as 'project name' - CAKE, that way you have both versions. I do that to keep up with which version it was mixed in. Good luck!

I didn't read the OP well enough. Thought you were using CbB.
Its much easier with CbB than with sonar but can still be accomplished as long as there is something in the hole.
To avoid further confusion, I cant add anything that's already been explained here.

I am now in Band Lab Sonar and am trying the same thing. I am making progress, though slowly. It DOES seem to be the case that I can't omit a given number of measures from all the tracks in my song if there is no data in a given track at that time. I therefore, as suggested, tried to move data into all those measures, so I can then delete it, with the corresponding "hole."
One thing I keep running into. For some reason, I sometimes can't split a clip. For instance, on 1 MIDI clip, I can  easily R click and then see the "Split" command. However, if I then go to the track directly below it, I cannot get the "Split" command to appear.
Secondly, though not related, sometimes my Bass track suddenly stops playing. I think that may be because on what I thought was my guitar track, I had put in a change patch message. However, aren't though Track specific?
Thanks again for the support.
I should add that since I  can't easily delete certain tracks during the drum break, I am simply using the eraser tool--with the "full measure" menu option chosen---to move over to the left some of the other tracks. So far, it's working well. I'm of course moving those other tracks the same number of measures to the left as the part of the drum break that I deleted.
