  • What's the benefit of recording in Comping mode over SoS?

I fail to see any benefit of setting the recording mode to Comping. It actually makes things worse as it splits all the take lanes on stop when recording in a loop.
Sound on sound doesn't do that making removing the last take as easy as removing the top take lane, without splitting the others.
Am I missing something here? Is there any benefit of using comping mode at all?
I'm only talking about recording, not editing of course.

Actually, it makes no difference when editing either.

Correct, record mode is independent of editing. The main difference between the two recording modes is that Comp mode is intended to leave only one take active after recording stops, automatically muting the overlapped parts of previous takes, while Sound on Sound is intended for layering parts that will all remain audible.

When loop-recording, previous takes will be inaudible while recording regardless of the mode (much to the chagrin of users who want to layer loops in real time performance with Sound on Sound), but you'll have to manually mute the takes you don't want to hear on playback. If you restart the transport between takes, you'll hear previous takes in Sound on Sound mode, but they'll be muted in Comp mode.

Thanks.
And what's the point of automatic splitting the takes on stop in comping mode? Can it be disabled? It really annoys me and for that reason I prefer to use SOS.

EDIT: Never mind

Using Sound on Sound, Store Takes in Separate Tracks, deselecting Create New Lanes on Overlap, and loop recording within a folder works well for how I like to record and audition takes. I like how Sonar is flexible in that way.

I think the way sonar handles loop recording in comping mode is flawed :(
The last FULL take (of the length set by the loop points) should be left unmuted.
The very last one is when I reach to hit the spacebar to stop recording and should be muted.
No clip splitting should be done too.
So, for now I'm going to stick to SoS. Which is a shame, because comping mode would be ideal for me.

One of the most crucial factors for me is to be able to hear my previous take for timings sake. I need the reference to know exactly the moment I need to start playing and sometimes there's a bit of overlap, and with comping mode I have no reference because the previous take is muted.
