  • Addictive Drums 2 Sounds Different Inside Sonar Vs. Standalone

Good morning everyone, hope all is well!

I realized something rather odd this morning concerning Addictive Drums 2 inside Sonar Platinum versus the standalone: it sounds noticeably different than what I set up in the standalone version. Everything is much thinner, most significant is that the kick lacks punch, as does the snare and toms, inside Sonar Platinum.
Basically I would like to know what exactly the problem may be, and what I could do to rectify it.
Right now, I've got it set up so that Sonar creates a MIDI source, track folder, and audio tracks for each mono output. Inside AD2, I have everything set up as a separate out (post fader) going also to the master. The MIDI itself is set up to go to a custom drum map.

Any advice is welcome. =-)
Also if any other info is needed, just let me know!

It's probably a routing issue.
Check where your AD outputs are directed, the Sonar audio tracks that are bringing the sounds into Sonar, and any busses.  My guess is that your gain staging isn't optimal.

I do separate outs pre-fader without master. Do you have a stereo track in Sonar for the AD master? If not then just do separate out. Keep in mind the standalone goes through the master bus in AD which may have effects on it. That may contribute to the different sound you're hearing.

Do you have AD playback sync'ed with transport?  If so you may be playing both the midi part through AD and the pattern preview in AD which may be causing phase issues.

Thanks so much everyone for your responses and suggestions, I appreciate it!

Looks like I had a mix of almost everything going on here.
Slugbaby, my gain staging was... Strange, to say the least. Fixed now.
Mistergreen, I had everything going to a separate out and the master, excluding the master seems to have fixed the remaining weirdness after fixing the gain staging.
Dwardzala, that's a new one for me. How would I check that in case I need to in the future?

Thanks again everyone!

If you have AD open, you can preview patterns using the play button in AD.  If you press play on Sonar's transport and the preview pattern also starts playing you will hear both.  Usually they are the same so it only sounds a little off.

what about the midi you use to trigger it and the velocity of the hits?

I imagine if you set up within addictive drummer or click around...  it probably gives full velocity hits making the kit sound like its been pounded on a little harder.

if you craft up some midi and the velocity on all the hits are low..  it would trigger soft hits from the kick.

just a thought, but could be part of the reason

I don't know if this applies to your situation, but I will share my thoughts just in case it does.

I generally use Battery 3 for my midi drums, because I have used it for years, and it sounds great most of the time.

Anyways - I too route each kit piece to its own audio outputs, however not all of the kit pieces in a particular kit are mono - several may well be stereo.  Most of the time, the snare and kick seem to be stereo - where left may be top and right might be bottom, for the snare, and so on.

I am in the middle of a bunch of stuff, and apologize, as I cannot go load up a project and tell you how to figure out which kit pieces are stereo/mono - plus I am a bit brain dead from doing an 1100 mile drive to help a friend move.

Anyways - in addition to what the others posted above, perhaps you can check to see if you are missing some of the sound of kit pieces that are meant to be routed as stereo, versus mono.

Hope that helps,

I have had the same issue. Mine have to do with the correct drum map. I have used BFD drums forever and never had one issue. Sometimes I get things right with AD2, sometimes I just beat my head against the wall.

Not at my pc, there's a thread about ad2 on this forum that includes a track template and drum map. That helped me, along with lots of ad2 videos on cw and yt.
There are many ways to do drums. I adapted the ad2 template to snare, kick, hh in mono, oh and room in stereo. Sounds the most real to me.
