lifetime license sounds really nice,
but what really matters is the licensing/activation system,
with all respect to Cakewalk, CCC is not pleasure to work with,
for serious studio use of Sonar, computers being completely offline (due to security and functional reasons), it appears fairly impossible to use Sonar - I would really like to see something like "export iLok license" within CCC, so it would be possible to run Sonar on offline production computers

For this, you use offline activation.
I hope they never go iLok

Using the CCC and trying to install it on a computer not conected to the internet, was a pretty major pain.

I spent many hours yesterday trying to get it to actually install.  I had various problems, trying on different Win 7 computers to determine if there was perhaps an issue with one of them, etc..(these are all computers that run X3 Producer perfectly).  Even connecting to the internet instead of the real off-line activation.

I still don't know why I installed it with the CCC, got the green light and the launch button.  Yet nothing happened after hitting launch.  Nothing.  I eventually just launched the .exe by itself to try to get it to work.  I'm concerned that the CCC isn't going to see it on the next update, and I don't know how any overrides are going to work and I don't have the disc space to let installs pile up.

Sheesh. CCC is an "online" tool.

Trying to use it offline is not much different than driving a screw with a hammer or a band saw. Something might happen, but probably not what you expected.

If you are an offline user and have limited disk space, why not invest a few $ in a USB drive to store the historical installers that you manually downloaded? If you had to roll back would you really need to roll back to Jan 2015 in May 2016? I think not. Copy over the last two or possibly three updates form the USB to hard drive and roll back.

I used USBs to get the files to the computer.  That does not in any way help the installer problems I experienced.  The CCC checks the files in the downloaded folder, which is where I placed the files.  It is no different than actually download them through the app itself.

The other question is how the installs override previous installs.  It was not a question of having the installer file itself on the HD.

....Switching over to the Mac is not something I would consider in the near future for myself, but I may be the minority...

Well, that's two of us...

Exactly, that's what it looks like at least! Is this the case? Anyone with Producer can get lifetime Platinum for $199?

Make it three!

I think most existing SONAR users aren't going to run out and buy really expensive and more difficult to upgrade hardware just to get the same features at the same performance. So I think there are probably more than 3.

There was something for everyone in the three facets of this announcement. Those of you in the 'meh' class might need meds.
Many thanks to the bakers for lots of hard work pushed through at a remarkably low cost.

There was nothing for those of us who wanted improvements in staff view.

I should have been more precise. I meant to download from your cakewalk account, install with the .exe, and then activate offline. Hope it helps.
All the best.

Well, I decided to go for the lifetime Platinum option. I'm hoping it'll be worth it, depends on if they come up with some decent upgrades....They may not come up with anything, but my experience with Cakewalk has always been very good, they usually give a very good bang for the buck experience. I haven't been doing much recording lately, so I had to really rethink my situation. I decided I want the most up to date recording software I can get, just for the times when inspiration hits. I may not use it today or tomorrow, but I want to be ready for when the time comes. Sonar Platinum has been working rock solid for me since I bought it years ago...so keeping it up to date makes sense to me. My birthday is coming up soon so I decided what the heck, this would make a nice present to myself.

You know my first version of this software was the dos version that was just a midi program with no audio.  I have purchased every new version since then.  I have a lot of money invested since 1987 and for the most part I am very happy to date.  This latest marketing turn is a bit worrisome but, I'm going to keep my fingers and toes crossed that the bean counters and sales guys haven't released the Kraken.
