• SONAR
  • Crash on opening from Start Menu only

For some files, if I try to open them from the Start Menu, I get a "SONAR.PDF has stopped working" message as soon as the file opens. But invariably, I can open these files with no problem from Windows File Explorer, or the File | Open menu on the Tool Bar.

Has anyone else seen this and/or learned what's going on?

I've not seen it, but you can right-click it, then choose More > Open file location to check the properties of the link/shortcut.

They should reside in C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

Sorry if I wasn't clear. I was referring to the SONAR Platinum Start window, not the Windows Start Menu.

Im going to go out on a limb and say your issue might have to do with Windows updates.
The start screen is not any different than opening a project from the jump list (File/ open).
But it is possible the start screen uses a VB or C++ library that is separated from the application in some way.

When was the last time you updated windows ?

Possibly a UAC issue as well, does the same happen if you run sonar as administrator ?

Thanks, chuckebaby.

I keep Windows updates up to date. I always run SONAR as Administrator. This only happens with certain projects, so it may be linked to a particular plug-in; I haven't investigated that yet.

This isn't something new. It's been happening with a handful of projects for at least six months. Sometimes it will stop, for reasons I can't explain.

you can always load your project using "Safe mode". this will allow you to load 1 plug in at a time to possibly find an offending plug in as the culprit.
If it is a plug in however, that will have little to do with your start menu.

Running Sonar as administrator means right clicking the Sonar icon and choosing "Run as Administrator".
You are doing this all the time ? you really don't need to. I was merely suggesting a possible UAC problem.

I've checked the Run As Administrator box under Properties | Advanced on SONAR's shortcut.

yep, I've had this happen on and off over the last year or so. I think a few updates ago, I was getting this every time I initially fired up Sonar. I would then re-open the project and it was all good. Rarely did it stop working the 2nd time. Once I initially started Sonar for the day, it usually didn't happen again with other projects.

This seemed to rectify itself somehow. It just stopped happening after another Sonar update and/or Windows. Couldn't put my finger on who or what though. I did have a recent 'stopped working' again, which again, seemed to be rectified the next time I started Sonar. It's a bit hit and miss and seems arbitrary. On occasion I've had a crash to desktop when opening another project from the start screen.

Sorry I don't have any suggestions but I wanted to let you know that this particular issue has been around on-and-off for some time now...it just seems better now, but I don't have a clue why.

I'm glad it's not just me!
