I have everything but the case for my new studio computer and so I am beginning to backup this computer and my wife's computer.

I'll be giving this computer to my wife but keeping the HDDs in it. Then I'll be moving the studio computer here to become my new personal computer. Both HDDs will be formatted and I'll reinstall Win10 on them then use the current free upgrade on my wife's current computer for the new studio computer.

In theory, this should all work fine... in theory. I'm still unsure what parts of the computer the hardware profile attaches to for Win10 and everyone seems to have a different opinion on it.

Not sure I understand, but I am not sure that will work . . . I could be wrong and/or misunderstanding something/everything

I agree the "use the free upgrade from the Wife's computer" may not be legal.  If the Wife's computer is a factory (Dell, HP, etc) and the upgrade is for the OEM version on the PC it may not be valid on another PC.

Apart from the perhaps legal side, you basically have to upgrade an in place installation of a qualifying OS and then it is tied to that machine, (this maybe what op meant about being unsure about which component it is tied to) then you could download an ISO and do a clean install, but ONLY on that machine, I don't think it will work on another machine unless it is a 'retail' product you actually purchased, that is my understanding, I could be wrong.

Changing computers is always fun.... you might need to buy another license. In a new build this is the best approach IMHO. A hard copy that you have on hand in case you ever need it again. Good luck with it!

I build all my own machines. It may not work and if it doesn't, so be it. I'm more concerned about the other two not reauthorizing for whatever reason. There have been some issues with it for some people.
