  • Is it just me, or is Cubase still too much?

Just went to have a look at a possible purchase of Cubase, and it's near $600 (AUD) - does anyone else think this is excessive?

Yes I do. But then I've been spoiled with doing the Sonar upgrade path year after year. The most I paid was for Pro Audio 8 back about 20 years ago. Since then it's been upgrades.

I wanted to demo Cubase but didn't care for the whole elicense method of doing things.

Crossgrading is a lot cheaper (i.e. Sonar to Cubase)

The current crossgrade price is about $340 USD

- plus throw in another $35 USD for the eLicenser dongle.

It depends.  If you are more of a hobbyist then the cost could seem steep.  Maybe Reaper at $60 would be much better value in that situation.

If you are earning $50K a year from using it though,  then it is a drop in the ocean, plus it is tax deductible.

If you don't go for the crossgrade to Cubase pro, you could go for Cubase Artist at around 250GBP. It will do most of what a dedicated semi-pro musician could want.

Thanks I'll check that one out. Of all of the alternatives, to me, it seems Cubase is the closest to Sonar.
EDIT: haha, still near $500!

If your focus is composing, it's hard to beat Cubase.
With notation, note expression, and advanced/esoteric MIDI editing, it's well equipped for that purpose.

No, it's not that much. £265 Inc tax at Steinberg's site, = ~ 350 USD?

Ah, sorry, you're in Australian Dollars, so that's around 460.

If you're not in a hurry to get away from SONAR, just get on Steinberg's mailing list and wait until maybe July or August.  Steinberg almost always has a decent sale around that time of year, although those sales typically do not last for very long.
