  • Notes Dropping Out Using MOTU MIDI Express Xt in Platinum

Back in November I bought a MOTU MIDI Express xt to replace my M-Audio Delta 1010. During record and playback I noticed notes randomly dropping out. I contacted Customer Support (have the email transcripts) and after several weeks of suggested testing I was told to return the unit. They did find it had an issue with stuck MIDI notes but no dropouts, and sent me a replacement unit. Yesterday I hooked it up and it is still doing the same thing. I went to Preferences/MIDI/Playback and began adjusting the buffer time to see if that may be the possible cause. I changed the time from 100ms, 250ms, 350ms, 500ms, 1000ms, 1500ms, 2000ms, & 3000ms but the only change was where the notes dropped out. My MIDI set up is that I use a Roland FA-06 as the input and then I output back to it, a Korg X-50, Roland Integra 7, Boss DR-880, Roland JV-880, and EMU Proteus module. My PC has a Quad Core 3.4GHz processor, 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD as the primary, 3TB HD, & 3TB HD as back up drives.
Any help anyone out there could provide would be greatly appreciated and thanks in advance!

Hey Brian,
I would stick to 500 ms with your buffer. however to find the route of your dropping notes, what driver did you install for your XT ?
Did you get it here
http://www.motu.com/download/download_matching_downloads.html?product_id=16

And what mode are you running in ? (WMD, ASIO, WASAPI)
What OS are you using ?

Chuck,
Thank you for your reply! To answer your questions:
- I am running Windows 10 64 bit
- I downloaded the MOTU driver that was compatible with Windows 10
- I also verified that the XT had the latest firmware installed as well
- I am running ASIO as I am using a Presonus 24.4.2 Fire wire mixer

I will set the buffer to 500ms and run some more tests.
Thanks again!

Is this a USB unit? If so, is it on it's own USB port? I had issues with a Focusrite with stuck MIDI notes and audio glitches. I moved it to a different USB port with no other devices sharing it that was also on it's own internal hub on the motherboard and all my problems went away.

emwhy,
Thank you for responding.
It is on its own separate USB port direct to the PC and I even ran tests with all my other USB port units disconnected and got the same result.
Thanks again for your response!

MIDI buffering isn't relevant to MIDI going in and out of hardware ports. Since it's unlikely you got two defective MOTU units, I would suspect something's going on with your USB port drivers or some other software/driver is conflicting with the MOTU drivers. Try testing on a different PC if you can. Or maybe just move the MOTU to a different port, including switching from USB2 if you're currently using USB3 or vice versa.

P.S. I have a first-generation MIDI Express XT; it has always worked flawlessly across many PCs and operating systems.  I also have an UtraProteus. It just went haywire last weekend at age 23. I thought it was just a dead CMOS battery, but it didn't come back fully with a slightly under-sized replacement. I'm hoping that battery was just too tired from having been on the shelf for quite a few years. I have the odd-size 2330 on order; fingers crossed.

brundlefly,
Thanks for that useful information and good luck with getting the UltraProteus back in shape. I have a Kurzweil K2Vx that I no longer use but always keep checking the batteries just in case!

I'm running Platinum with the MOTU MIDI Express XT and have been using it for 14 years, no MIDI drop outs.
Install the latest driver and check our MIDI Express XT software settings.    Perhaps a bad MIDI cable?
