  • Importing audio tracks - terrible performance?

Hey!

Yesterday I needed to import a number of 24bit 96khz tracks into a project. The tracks were quite large in size but the importing took..... FOREVER! Tried smaller tracks and they still took very long to import. I almost thought that Sonar had crashed.

Anyone else having this issue? I've tried the latest version of Sonar and the preview but same performance issue.

It looks like it is disk/computer related.
Try to copy the wave files to the Audio subfolder of your project. Then import the files into Sonar and make sure Sonar does not copy the files but reference the audio from its current location.

what is the sample rate of your project?

I find this only happens if the sample rate of the project is way different than the file Im pulling in.

Like....  say your project is 24/44,100

When you drag those 24/96 files in it has to do some conversions, and it will take time.  If you drag a lot in, it has to do a lot of conversions.

Im not sure if you can speed that up.

If the file matches the project its practically instant for me at least.  I can drag and drop a .wav and as long as no conversions have to happen...  it happens like right now.

it might just be the nature of the beast with files of this nature into different sample rate projects.

I'd avoid 96 as much as possible if you are in charge of creating the initial files and setting the bit depth and sample rate.  96k doesnt do anything but take up extra space and take longer processing time to work with.  Its almost 5 times higher than the highest frequency a good set of human ears can hear.  Its not adding anything.  24/48000 is the highest you should ever need and thats only for like audio that will be broadcast on television.  Otherwise stick to 24/44,100, and then of course 16/44,000 for a mixdown for CD quality audio.

of course if somebody sent you the tracks to integrate into an existing project at a different sample rate...  I guess you just have to deal lol.  maybe global bypass all plugins before dragging them in just to reduce some cpu load

I had set the project to the same samplerate and bitdepth as the files. But I tried converting them to 44khz using Audition and now when importing them it's as fast as ever. Filesize is less of course but I still dont quite get it. Havent had this problem before.

Single track were 200mb+ and now 100mb+ (yup they are long)

meh
I routinely import 1 to 2 gig files.....it takes longer than I want but has been pretty consistent for the last couple of years.  approx 3 to 4 minutes...
